High School Playoff Roundup : Serra Girls Take Step Toward Title

The Serra High School girls’ field hockey team moved a step closer to its ninth San Diego Section championship in 10 seasons, defeating San Pasqual, 4-0, in a first-round playoff game at home Tuesday.

EthelineMendoza, Ellen Springall, Julia Taylor and Kelsey Monagan scored for the top-seeded Conquistadors (19-1). Senior goalie Allison Kahn recorded her 15th shutout of the season.

“Our team works hard as a group, not as individuals,” said Mendoza, Serra’s leading scorer with 34 goals.

Serra plays host to Rancho Buena Vista in Thursday’s semifinal at 3 p.m. In the other semifinal, at a site to be determined, Fallbrook will face Mira Mesa.

Rancho Buena Vista 1, Torrey Pines 0--Torrey Pines (11-16) had defeated the Longhorns twice during the regular season, but Rancho Buena Vista scored with 5 minutes left.

Mira Mesa 4, Bishop’s 0--Host Mira Mesa (17-2) outshot No. 3-seeded Bishop’s, 20-1, but could not score until the 43rd minute of the game. Mira Mesa then scored 4 goals in 15 minutes. Sarah Hallock (28 goals for the season) scored first, followed by Kisa West, Miki Hackler and Janel Wing. Bishop’s goalie Joanna Bone had 16 saves.

Fallbrook 1, San Marcos 0--Fallbrook upset second-seeded San Marcos at San Marcos.

CIF Girls’ Tennis Individual Playoffs

In doubles matches, all the top-seeded players advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The match of the day was a 2-hour and 45-minute match in which eighth-seeded Jodi Rosano and Leah Splavec of Poway defeated sisters Janine and Nini Schiess of Bishop’s, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Another sister team, top-seeded Kim and Heidi D’Janogly of San Dieguito, beat Jennifer Olow and Carrie Peter of Mt. Miguel, 6-0, 6-0.

In singles matches rain delayed from Friday, Suzy Drage of Mission Bay defeated Esther O’Brien of Christian, 6-2, 6-0. Seventh-seeded Brooke Gelardi of Bishop’s defeated Mary Alice Cardenas of Our Lady of Peace, 6-0, 6-0.
