SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : DIVISION III : El Dorado, Sporrer Defeat Burbank
Scott Sporrer rushed for two touchdowns Friday night and El Dorado High School defeated Burbank, 24-14, in the first round of the Southern Section Division III playoffs at Burroughs High School.
El Dorado’s first play from scrimmage moved the ball 55 yards to the Burbank 9 on a flea-flicker pass from second-string quarterback Phil Nevin to Robert Cortez. Sporrer scored two plays later on a 2-yard plunge with 9 minutes to play in the first quarter.
Burbank tied the score with 1 minute left in the first half on a 2-yard run by Tarin Cardenaz, who rushed for 62 yards in 17 carries.
With 7 seconds to play in the half, Dave Berman grabbed a 7-yard touchdown pass from David Swearingen to give El Dorado a 14-7 lead at intermission.
The touchdown was set up by a 31-yard completion to Matt Luke, which advanced the ball to the 19 with 30 seconds left. Swearingen ran 12 yards to the 7 before throwing the scoring pass. Swearingen completed 3 of 11 passes for 51 yards.
Burbank closed to 21-14 on a 4-yard run by Tony Spatola with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Nevin closed out the scoring with a 50-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.
