Division VIII Football Playoffs : Woodbridge Runs Past Cabrillo for 31-14 Victory

Scott Seymour scored 2 touchdowns to lead Woodbridge High School to a 31-14 victory over Cabrillo in the opening round of the Southern Section Division VIII playoffs Friday night at Irvine.

Seymour scored on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Fred Schweer with 8:20 left in the first quarter and hauled in an 11-yard pass from Schweer in the second quarter. He also rushed for 60 yards in 11 carries.

Schweer completed 15 of 29 passes for 215 yards for Woodbridge, the defending Desert-Mountain Conference champion.

Schweer connected with Gary Gibson on a 5-yard pass to give Woodbridge (10-1) a 14-0 lead.

Cabrillo (6-5) closed the gap to 21-14 on touchdown runs of 11 and 53 yards by quarterback Scott Vigil.

But Woodbridge countered with a 22-yard field goal by Troy Holmes with 9:04 left to extend its lead to 24-14. Schweer’s 1-yard run with 6:11 finished the scoring and finished off Cabrillo.

Bloomington 48, Costa Mesa 21--Travis Robertson scored 5 touchdowns to lead host Bloomington. Robertson scored on runs of 1, 4, 2, 72 and 4 yards. Tony Wright added 2 touchdowns on runs of 6 and 67 yards. Trailing, 21-0, in the second quarter, Costa Mesa (5-5-1) cut the deficit to 7 with 2 touchdowns. Duby Ospina returned a kickoff 90 yards for one score and quarterback Rich Schones scored on a 15-yard run. However, a Wright touchdown made it 28-0 at halftime. Bloomington (10-1) got 2 touchdown runs by Robertson in the second half to build a 42-14 lead. Schones threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to David Salladay for the Mustangs’ final score.
