Behind the tireless legs of Curtis Scott, the Valley-area’s leading rusher, Monroe High defeated Roosevelt, 26-18, Friday night in the first round of the City Section 3-A Division playoffs at home. Scott, who had 1,539 yards entering the contest, rushed for 274 yards and 3 touchdowns in an amazing 55 carries.

Scott rushed for 2 touchdowns in the first half to give the Vikings what appeared to be a safe, 14-3 lead in the second quarter. However, Roosevelt (5-6) returned the ensuing kickoff 36 yards to the Monroe 48-yard line. Three plays later quarterback Oscar Tavera scampered 43 yards down the right sideline to cut the gap to 14-10 with 1:10 left in the half.

Undaunted, Monroe took the second-half kickoff and marched 89 yards in 19 plays, culminating in Scott’s 5-yard run. On the drive, which consumed 8:37, Scott carried the ball 15 times for 82 yards.
