Women’s Basketball Roundup : Cal Poly Pomona Defeats Fullerton in Overtime, 72-70

Cal Poly Pomona scored the first 7 points in overtime and went on to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 72-70, in the championship game of the Converse women’s basketball tournament Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.

Fullerton missed 2 shots to tie the score in the final seconds of overtime. Jill Matyuch of Fullerton (1-1) made a shot with 8 seconds left in regulation to tie it, 64-64, to force the overtime.

Matyuch scored a team-high 18. Nici Bracken scored 26 for Cal Poly Pomona.

In the Chapman Doubletree tournament:

Weber State 94, Chapman 91--Melanie Knott scored on a driving layup and free throw with 39 seconds left to help Weber State (2-0) in the championship game.

Chapman (2-1), which led most of the game, narrowed the Weber State lead to 92-91 with 29 seconds left on Kim Rieff’s layup, but tournament most valuable player Dawn Lawler sealed the victory with three seconds with an inside shot.

Lawler led all scorers with 33 points.

Julie King led the Panthers with 20 points and Corine Sandfry added 19.

In the Freedom Bowl tournament:

Oregon State 81, UC Irvine 54--Monica Raspberry scored 25 points to lead Oregon State (2-0) in the round-robin tournament at UC Irvine. Kristi Ahlstedt scored 12 and Natasha Parks 11 for Irvine (0-1), which committed 40 turnovers in the game.
