College Basketball Roundup : Aztecs Get 83-58 Win Over Baylor

Sam Johnson scored 16 points to lead San Diego State to an 83-58 victory over Baylor Tuesday night at Waco, Tex.

The Aztecs (2-0) led by 18 at halftime despite a 44-footer by Denton at the buzzer.

San Diego State took a 16-11 first-half lead and increased it to 26-11 to take control of the game.

Baylor (0-3) was led by Julius Denton’s 18 points.

Idaho 50, Washington State 40--Riley Smith scored 16 points as the Vandals won at Moscow, Ida., to remain undefeated.

Ricardo Boyd scored consecutive baskets on an inbounds play and a breakaway dunk, and Smith added a dunk with 10 seconds left as Idaho (4-0) pulled away in the last 2 minutes.

Both teams shot poorly from the floor, as the Cougars (1-2) made 16 of 44 field goals for 36%. Idaho made 17 of 42 for 40%, but the Vandals shot 80% at the free throw line, making 16 of 20.

Iowa 96, Drake 72--B.J. Armstrong scored 20 of his 25 points in the first half, and Ed Horton added 19 points as the sixth-ranked Hawkeyes broke the game open early at Des Moines, Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (2-0) dominated the game with full-court pressure and the inside strength of the 6-foot 8-inch Horton and 6-10 Matt Bullard.

Illinois 86, Metro State 55--Nick Anderson scored 15 points and three teammates finished in double figures as the No. 7 Illini defeated a Division II opponent from Denver in a game at Champaign, Ill.

Florida St. 100, Fla. International 75--Tony Dawson scored 27 points and four other Florida State players were in double figures as the No. 14 Seminoles won at Tallahassee, Fla.

Florida State (2-0) led, 58-42, at halftime and twice led by 30 points late in the game.

Louisiana Tech 75, Fresno St. 59--Randy White and Darryl Knight, each with 18 points, led five players in double figures at Ruston, La.

Wilbert Hooker scored 14 to lead Fresno State, which also got 13 points from Derrick Barden and 11 from Andre Sims.

Auburn 74, Georgia State 70--Derrick Dennison scored 19 points and Kirt Hankton added 6 in the final 3 minutes as the Tigers rallied to win at home.

Hankton converted a 3-point play with 1 second remaining to seal the victory after he had put Auburn (2-0) ahead for good with 3:34 left on another 3-point play.

Indiana 87, Miami (Ohio) 70--Sophomore guard Jay Edwards scored 28 points and had 7 rebounds, and center Todd Jadlow had 13 points as the Hoosiers (3-2) won at Oxford, Ohio.

Indiana St. 70, Texas Wesleyan 66--Eddie Bird scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half as the Sycamores rallied to win at Terre Haute, Ind.

Bird, a 6-6 sophomore forward, led the Sycamores as his brother, Larry looked on. The Boston Celtics forward recently underwent surgery for bone spurs in both heels.

Illinois-Chicago 97, Loyola (Chicago) 84--Tony Freeman scored 26 points, Corwin Hunt had 18 points and Darren Guest had 16 for Illinois-Chicago.

Middle Tennessee 101, Soviet National Team 95--Guard Chris Rainey made 6 free throws in the final 27 seconds of overtime as the Blue Raiders ended the Soviets’ U.S. tour with a loss at Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Soviet guard Valdemaras Khomichus led the Soviets with 27 points, Rimas Kurtinaitis had 22 and Adrydas Sabonis had 11.
