San Diego High School Basketball Roundup : Serra Rallies in Closing Minutes to Defeat Mission Bay

Conrad Jones’ only basket of the night was a 3-point shot with 2 seconds remaining to boost Serra past Mission Bay, 44-43, in the first round of the Mt. Helix basketball tournament Tuesday at Helix High.

Serra (1-0) trailed by 9 with 3 minutes 30 seconds remaining but outscored Mission Bay, 12-2, down the stretch. Keith Ladue led Serra with 14 points. Brett Grebing had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Mission Bay (0-1).

In other Helix tournament games:

San Pasqual 59, Mount Miguel 40--Missing six players because of the football playoffs, San Pasqual (1-0) started four sophomores and a junior, and won handily while scoring 20 fast-break points. San Pasqual sophomore Erik Meek had 15 points and 13 rebounds in 3 quarters. Richard Stark of San Pasqual led all scorers with 18, and junior Brian Banner had 12.

Helix 57, San Dieguito 45--John Pressler had 29 points and 18 rebounds to lead Helix (1-0). Rich Haar added 10 points and 6 assists for Helix.

In other games:

Kearny 47, Marian 38--Marian outscored Kearny, 19-10, in the fourth quarter, but Kearny held on at Kearny. Andre White, with 21 points, and Omar Salihi with 10 led Kearny (1-0). Jerry Conlin led Marian (0-1) with 26 points. Kearny led, 21-12, at the half.

San Marcos 67, Vista 60--Jay Kitti scored 17 points and Joe Buchanon added 13 to give San Marcos a season-opening victory. Eric Wilburn had 10 rebounds and 8 points for San Marcos.
