THE PREPS : Reality’s Good Enough; Irvine Beats University

Irvine High School Coach Steve Keith said his team had a “Fantasy Island-type of game” Tuesday night when it shot 71% and routed Marina by 43 points.

The Vaqueros didn’t exactly give Keith a rerun Friday night, but they managed a 53-40 victory over visiting University. Guard Bryan Allred led Irvine with 15 points that included a trio of 3-pointers.

“We’re kind of coming back to reality,” Keith said. “Our offense was kind of hit and miss tonight but I liked the way we played 32 minutes of good defense.”

The Irvine defense was paced by forward Todd Trout, who also pulled down 10 rebounds, and center Raphael Molle, who held University center Stefan Mumaw to a pair of field goals inside the key. Sophomore John Molle--Raphael’s younger brother--also played a solid inside game and finished with 14 points.

Allred sparked Irvine’s offense when he sank a 20-footer early in the second period. On the next trip downcourt, John Molle turned a steal into a layup and the Vaqueros took off on a 10-point run for a 26-10 lead.

University, which spent much of the night tossing bad passes and shooting air balls, couldn’t get back into the game after that.

Trojan guard Junior Oliver was the game’s high scorer with 16 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers late in the game.
