HIGH SCHOOLS : Sweetwater’s Rice Beats La Jolla With 3-Pointer at Buzzer

Cortez Rice hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give Sweetwater a 68-65 victory over La Jolla in a Hilltop tournament boys’ basketball game at Hilltop Friday.
Sweetwater got the ball with 9 seconds to go before setting up Rice’s winning shot.
Rice finished with 18 points. David Berteaux led La Jolla with 24 points.
In another Hilltop tournament game:
Kearny 70, Mira Mesa 67 (3 OTS)--Kearny squandered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead but outscored Mira Mesa, 5-2, in the third overtime. Tom Rawlins and Andre White each scored 16 points for Kearny. Mark Ziegler scored 20 for Mira Mesa.
Norsemen/Warhawk tournament
Morse 65, Clairemont 59--Ray McDavid scored 32 points and had 16 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Morse took a big lead and held on for the victory. Lawrence Mothershed had 16 points for Morse, and Clairemont (2-3) was 8 for 22 from the line.
Torrey Pines tournament
Torrey Pines 77, Ramona 66--Courtie Miller had 27 points and 8 rebounds and Kevin Flanagan had 20 points and 12 rebounds at Torrey Pines. Ramona stayed close, 38-37 at halftime and 56-53 after three quarters, but Torrey Pines pulled away with a 21-13 fourth quarter. Nate Hollingsworth had 26 points, and Tony Newman had 17 for Ramona (3-2). Ramona had 23 turnovers, Torrey Pines just 12.
San Clemente tournament
Fallbrook 55, Foothill 52--Freshman Chris Miller scored 14 points as Fallbrook reached tonight’s tournament final against Anaheim Savannah. Keith Elston, Travis Teagle and Tim Cummins had 11 points apiece for Fallbrook.
Nonleague
Escondido 66, University City 65--University City’s Anthony Hill scored 27 points but he missed one shot he wished he could have had back.
Hill missed the first of two free throws with no time left after being fouled on a three point attempt at the buzzer, leaving Escondido with the victory.
Brooks Barnhard made the front end of a one-and-one to put Escondido ahead, 66-64, with 9 seconds left to play.
Barnhard had 25 points and 15 rebounds and Chris Heintschel added 22 for Escondido (2-0). University City is 3-1.
Poway 75, Patrick Henry 49--John Culberson had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Adam Jones added 12 points and 12 rebounds as Poway rolled at Poway. Gabby Awbrey added 14 points for Poway (2-0), and Chad Milling came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds. Poway outrebounded Patrick Henry, 41-24. Bart Brandenburg scored 14 points for Patrick Henry (3-2).
Mt. Carmel 79, Oceanside 49--Mt. Carmel outscored Oceanside, 23-7, in the second quarter in its season opening victory at home. Mike Graves scored 17 points, and Jeff Hensley added 16 to lead Mt. Carmel. Eric Mitchell scored 14 for Oceanside.
Monte Vista 69, Santana 62--Jeff Polinsky scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter at Santana. The game was tied, 49-49, after 3 quarters. Santana is 4-1, Monte Vista 2-1.
Helix 55, Grossmont 42--John Pressler scored 17 points to lead Helix at Grossmont. Keith Price had 10 points for Grossmont.
Mission Bay 52, San Dieguito 33--Brett Grebing scored 17 points on 6-of-6 shooting to lead Mission Bay at home. Mission Bay led, 28-13, at the half and held San Dieguito to 4 points in the second quarter.
USDHS 45, Marian 40--Peter Ellis scored 17 points, and Greg Santos added 12 to lead USDHS at Marian (0-3). Jerry Conlon scored 15 points to lead Marian, which scored 3 points in the first quarter.
Girls’ basketball
Point Loma tournament
Fallbrook 46, San Diego 31--Carol Reed had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Terri Pearson scored 15 to lead Fallbrook.
Nonleague
Patrick Henry 38, Ramona 35--Trailing, 26-15, at halftime, Patrick Henry went to a press that forced 15 second-half turnovers at Patrick Henry. Rachelle Johnson scored 16 points for Patrick Henry (4-0), and Sorii Epps had 14. Kris Miller scored 13 points for Ramona (2-1), and Meleea Van Patten had 10.
El Cajon Valley 60, Mt. Miguel 21--Debbie Duhaney scored 21 points as El Cajon Valley routed Mt. Miguel.
Crawford 25, University City 19--Using a 2-3 zone defense, Crawford held University City to four fourth-quarter points. Kristie Gudith had nine points, and Charma Hendricks added six for the Colts. Crawford’s Nikki Daniels severely injured her knee in the first quarter and was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital.
