College Basketball Roundup : Turnaround Continues for Hawaii

Chris Gaines scored 28 points and made 2 free throws with 12 seconds remaining to lead Hawaii past Oregon, 74-70, late Saturday night in the championship game of the Hawaii Early Season Tournament.

It was the second tournament championship of the season for Hawaii (4-2), which also won its own Tip-Off Tournament.

Hawaii also equaled its total for victories from last season, when it was 4-25.

Oregon (3-2) moved within 2 points of Hawaii at 72-70 after Frank Johnson made 2 free throws and hit a 3-point shot.

Gaines was then fouled in backcourt and put the game out of reach with his 2 free throws.

Johnson led Oregon with 24 points, and teammate Randy Grant had 23.

Colorado 85, St. Louis 76--The Buffaloes outscored the Billikens, 13-4, in overtime to win at Boulder, Colo. Sunday.

A 3-point shot by Monroe Douglass of St. Louis tied the score at 72-72 with 7 seconds left in regulation.

Brian Robinson led Colorado with 18 points, while teammate Rodell Guest had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tony Manuel scored 21 points for St. Louis.

Nebraska 71, Texas Tech 69--Beau Reid scored on a layup with 10 seconds remaining for the decisive points in the Cornhuskers’ victory at Lubbock, Tex.

Texas Tech (1-5) had a chance to tie the score with 1 second left, but Todd Duncan missed the first of a one-and-one free-throw situation.

Reid led Nebraska (4-2) with 19 points. Sean Gay and J.D Sanders both scored 16 points for Texas Tech.

South Florida 82, Cincinnati 65--Freshman guard Radenko Dobras scored 21 points to lead the Bulls to victory at Tampa, Fla.

Center Hakim Shahid grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds for South Florida (3-0) and scored 14 points.

Cincinnati, which shot 33% from the field, is 2-1.
