Valley Basketball : Notre Dame Caught by Loyola Rally

Bryan Jamison of Loyola High scored with 10 seconds left to lead the Cubs to a come-from-behind, 60-58, victory over Notre Dame in a nonleague game Monday at Notre Dame.

The Knights (5-1), who lost to Loyola, 81-64, in the finals of the Loyola tournament Saturday night, were unable to protect a 58-53 lead with 1:30 remaining.

Brian Jones (31 points) and Pico Sandoval missed the front ends of 1-and-1 free-throw opportunities down the stretch for Notre Dame and Sandoval’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer went in and out.

“We had them right where we wanted them,” Notre Dame Coach Mick Cady said. “But we just didn’t put them away when we had the chance.”

In other high school boys’ games:

Bell-Jeff 84, Murphy 43--Nick Sanderson scored 20 points and Greg Dunn added 18 for the Guards (5-0), who used a 24-6 spurt in the third quarter to run away with a nonleague victory at Murphy.

Ray Witt and Chris Dyer added 13 and 11 points for Bell-Jeff.

Palisades 79, Royal 65--J. P. Ouellette made 6 3-point shots and scored 28 points for Royal (1-4) in a first-round game of the Beverly Hills tournament. Ouellette made 10 of 22 field-goal attempts and was 6 of 13 from 3-point range.

Sherman Oaks CES 81, Pius X 43--Marcus Littlejohn scored a game-high 25 points for Sherman Oaks CES in the first-round game of the L. A. Invitational tournament at Cal State Los Angeles.

Highland Hall 61, Windward 49--Craig Ernst had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Bob Ramirez added 18 points and 9 assists for host Highland Hall (3-1) in the nonleague game.

Providence 86, Landmark 12--Seven players scored in double figures for Providence (2-2) in the first-round game of the Cathedral tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

North Hollywood 89, Jefferson 38--G. G. Sweet scored a game-high 18 points as every Husky starter scored in double figures in the nonleague game at North Hollywood.

COLLEGE MEN

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 64, The Master’s 61--Coby Naess hit a 15-foot jumper with 40 seconds left to put San Luis Obispo ahead for good. Phil Hahn scored 18 to lead Master’s.
