Prep Roundup : Western Defeats Corona in Girls’ Basketball, 57-54

Western High School received strong play from Vicky Evans and Dena Peterson to defeat Corona, 57-54, Tuesday in the second round of the Savanna girls’ basketball tournament at Western High School.

Evans and Petersen each scored 18 points to lead Western. Petersen also had 10 rebounds.

In other Savanna tournament games:

La Habra 51, Los Alamitos 39--Kris Kelly had 17 points, and Jessica Carter had 13 to lead La Habra in a consolation game. Melinda Armstrong led all scorers with 21 for Los Alamitos (4-3).

University 40, Newport Harbor 26--Denise Gandara scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds for University (5-2) in a consolation game. Stacy Giem led Newport Harbor with 18 points.

In the Brea-Olinda tournament:

Foothill 55, Temple City 32--Tanya Foxe had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead Foothill (2-2) in a first-round game.

In the Express League:

Claremont 29, Bethel Baptist 19--Hope Norris scored 12 points to lead Claremont (2-3, 1-0) at the Huntington Valley Boys’ Club in Huntington Beach.

In nonleague games:

Orange 56, Villa Park 32--Gennie Hall and Nicole Champion each scored 14 points to lead host Orange (3-3). Champion also had 10 rebounds.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Anaheim 4, Villa Park 4--Keith Amen tied the score with 5 seconds left on a penalty kick for Villa Park. Glenn Salyer, Jim Obleda and Ron Lou also scored for Villa Park. Mike Tsarnas, Ralph Hidalgo, Jaime Vazquez and Mauricio Cruz scored for Anaheim.

Brea-Olinda 1, Tustin 1--Marco Hernandez scored in the first half for Brea (3-1-1). Hector Montoya tied the score in the second for host Tustin (1-2-1).

Fountain Valley 3, Santa Ana Valley 2--Joe Killy scored three goals, including the winner with 15 minutes left, for host Fountain Valley (4-1).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Dana Hills 5, Corona del Mar 0--Molly Sullivan scored three goals and Ann Viceroy two to lead host Dana Hills (6-0-2).

Edison 4, Laguna Hills 0--Briana Winter scored three goals for host Edison (3-4).

La Quinta 4, Lakewood 0--Lara Crowley scored two goals for La Quinta (3-0) at Lakewood.
