Prep Basketball : Irvine World News Tournament : Ferrell’s Last-Second Shot Gives University Victory

Pat Ferrell scored on a layup as time ran out in overtime to lead University High School to a 66-64 upset of top-seeded Long Beach Poly in the quarterfinal round of the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament Thursday at University.
Long Beach Poly (6-1) missed three consecutive shots with the score tied, 64-64, then Stefan Mumaw got the rebound for University with 10 seconds left in overtime. Mumaw threw a long pass to Ferrell, who was cutting to the basket unguarded and scored.
Ferrell scored 18 points, including a short basket with 41 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 60-60.
University had the ball for the final 11 seconds of regulation but couldn’t get a shot off.
Mumaw had a game-high 22 points for University (4-3), which plays Irvine tonight at Irvine in a 7:30 semifinal of the 32-team tournament.
In other quarterfinal games:
Irvine 70, Millikan 53--Bryan Allred scored 18 points to lead four Irvine players in double figures. Todd Trout added 16, Raphael Molle 14 and John Molle 12 for Irvine.
Savanna 56, Marina 42--Mustapha Abdi scored 15 points and Tim Tillman 11 for Savanna. Marina scored 6 points in each of the first 2 quarters as Savanna led, 23-12. Cherokee Parks scored 18 and Thi Nguyen 11 for Marina.
Savanna plays Kennedy at 7:30 tonight in a semifinal game at Woodbridge.
Kennedy 76, Brea-Olinda 73 (OT)--Jim Barker scored 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, for Kennedy. Mike Pettingill added 21.
In consolation-round games:
Foothill 44, Laguna Beach 41--Matt Wilkinson scored 17 points as Foothill rallied in the fourth quarter. Laguna Hills led, 39-32, at the end of three quarters but scored two points in the fourth. John Trevino scored 13, and Dan Blanton scored 11 for Laguna Beach.
Dana Hills 53, Esperanza 45--Mike Fedden scored 23 points to lead Dana Hills in the consolation quarterfinal. Greg Pope scored 11 for Esperanza.
Santa Ana 53, Fallbrook 51--Oscar Wilson scored 18 for Santa Ana, which trailed by three points going into the fourth quarter.
Edison 60, Laguna Hills 57--Bill Martineau scored 21 points and Bryan Murphy 13 to lead Edison.
Long Beach Wilson 67, Corona del Mar 52--Josh Levine scored 19 points for Long Beach Wilson. Matt Herrington had 16 for Corona del Mar.
