College Basketball : Glendale Wins 4th in a Row Behind Fowler

Freshman forward Gary Fowler scored a game-high 24 points and 3 teammates scored in double figures as Glendale defeated Antelope Valley, 91-71, in a nonconference game Thursday night at Antelope Valley.

The Vaqueros (8-4) won their fourth consecutive game but had to play without freshman guard and leading scorer Bruce Heicke, who was sidelined because of a sprained left ankle.

Glendale’s Alex Berry added 15 points, Justin Lord had 14 and Vigen Serop had 13 points and 10 assists.

In other games:

Occidental 81, Judson (Elgin, Ill.) 68--The Tigers, led by Chris Anderson’s 21 points, won their fifth game in a row en route to their best start in 9 years.

But the performance got a mixed review from Occidental Coach Brian Newhall.

“Our interior players were excellent,” Newhall said. “Our perimeter players had their worst game of the year. They shot the ball poorly, handled the ball poorly and made bad decisions.

“Nothing they did was right.”

Brett Dennis added 17 points and Ethan Caldwell and John Keister scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Occidental, which improved to 5-1.

Occidental made 18 of 21 free throws.

WOMEN

Moorpark 82, Chaffey 41--The Lady Panthers failed to cross halfcourt on their first 6 attempts and committed 28 first-half turnovers in the nonconference loss at Moorpark.

Moorpark forward Susie Smiley scored 20 points and teammate Kristie Sterbens had 17 points and 7 steals--6 in the first half.

Moorpark is 9-4; Chaffey dropped to 2-10.
