High School Basketball Roundup : Sweetwater’s Victory Double Trouble for Mar Vista

After suffering its first loss of the season Tuesday, the Sweetwater High School boys’ basketball team was back in stride Wednesday, doubling the score against Mar Vista in the second round of the Baron Optimist tournament at Bonita Vista High.

Carlos Campbell and Joseph McDowell each scored 17 points for Sweetwater (12-1) in its 78-39 victory.

“We were concentrating more, playing with a little more intensity than against University City (Tuesday),” Sweetwater Coach David Ybarra said. “We were due to have a game like that to bring us down to earth from an 11-0 start.”

Kiki Machicote added 12 for Sweetwater, which lost to University City, 74-56, in the first round.

Tim O’Neal scored 17 points, and Coit Valentine had 11 for Mar Vista.

In other Baron Optimist games:

Point Loma 66, Bonita Vista 47--Jim Griffin had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Point Loma. J.J. Stokes scored 10 points and had 14 rebounds, and Robert Quintana added 9 points and 8 assists for Point Loma (7-6).

Bonanza 74, Crawford 54--Tracy Holton scored 17 points and Chris Johnson had 14, but Crawford (9-2) couldn’t overcome 27 turnovers. Matt Vannah had 19 points for Bonanza (Las Vegas), Jamal Willis 15 and Rob Bastolo 13.

Santana tournament

Madison 79, Hilltop 49--Robby Robinson scored 40 points and added 12 rebounds as Madison improved to 2-0 in pool play. Teams play three round-robin games in pool play and will be paired off, based on records, in the championship bracket. It was the third time this season Robinson has scored 40 or more points. Brad Eaddy added 16 points and 20 rebounds, giving him four consecutive games of 20 or more rebounds. Madison led at the end of the first quarter, 24-13, and extended the lead to 48-27 by halftime. Donald Hardin scored 15 points for Hilltop, and Carlos Marques and Josh Wenning had 10 each.

Southwest 74, Clairemont 67--Adalberto Silva scored 24, and Will Tate had 23 as Southwest took an early 17-4 lead and held off Clairemont. Ray McDavid had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists for Clairemont (7-6), and Aaron Hill added 11. Sean Swensen added 11 points for Southwest is 7-5.

Santana 48, Chula Vista 40--Matt Panebianco scored 18 points, and Dean Thrall added 12 as Santana (7-1) overcame Chula Vista’s slowdown game. Leo Casas led Chula Vista (4-9) with 16 points, and Garrard Galvan had 10. Chula Vista’s only lead was 2-0; Santana then scored 8 consecutive points and led, 15-6, at the end of the quarter.

Lincoln 92, Grossmont 52--Joe Temple and Aaron Wilhite each scored 21 points for Lincoln (11-1). Victor Dean and Darryl McMillan added 18 and 15 for Lincoln. Todd Cady led Grossmont with 20 points. Wilhite had 19 rebounds and Temple and McMillan added 17 each. Lincoln led, 46-24, at the half.

Rohr/Aztec tournament

El Cajon Valley 66, Montgomery 33--Litho Solomon scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds to lead El Cajon Valley (2-5). Augustine Perez added 12 and Gilbert Velasco 10 for El Cajon Valley, which led, 12-3, after the first quarter and wasn’t challenged afterward.

San Dieguito 56, Castle Park 47--At Montgomery, Castle Park failed to get a scorer in double figures and dropped to 0-10 for the season. San Dieguito’s Brian Makwicz was the game’s leading scorer with 33 points. Brad Grady had 9 for Castle Park.

Montebello 75, Christian 68--After falling behind, 25-18, after the first quarter, Christian went to a zone, and Montebello went behind the 3-point arc. Montebello made 8 of its 11 3-pointers in the final three quarters to advance to the championship game for the second consecutive year. Montebello will play Basic (Las Vegas) in a rematch of last year’s game, won by Basic. Marcus Walley led Montebello with 19 points, and Mando Rios had 15. Darrell White and Tim Barkett had 22 point each for Christian (6-3), and David Jeremiah had 19.

Mt. Carmel tournament

USDHS 62, Woodbridge (Irvine) 56--University (4-3) led by as many as 15 points--it was 54-39 with 6 minutes left in the game--but it was the Dons’ 24-15 third quarter that helped propel them over visiting Woodbridge (1-7). Anthony Massa (18) and Greg Santos (16) combined for 34 points to lead the winners at Mt. Carmel. Peter Ellis and Massa had 6 and 5 steals for the Dons. Romalis Taylor had 15 points for Woodbridge.

Ramona 74, Mira Mesa 71--Ramona made a tournament record 21 of 24 free throw attempts and held off a late Mira Mesa rally at Mt. Carmel. Tony Newman scored 24 points, and Nate Hollingsworth had 15 points and 8 rebounds for Ramona (3-6). Mira Mesa closed to within two points in the final minute and failed on a couple opportunities to tie. Newman made 1 of 2 free throws with 6 seconds to play to secure the victory. Marc Ziegler scored 32 points for Mira Mesa, who plays Woodbridge of Irvine in today’s 3 p.m. seventh-place game. Ramona plays USDHS in the consolation championship at 4:45.

Poway 63, Oceanside 45--Four Poway players scored in double figures as the Titans took a 35-17 half time lead and coasted. Jon Culbertson had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Gabby Awbrey scored 16 points, Greg Sorrell had 10 points and Jay Blankenbeckler had 10 points, 5 assists and 2 steals for Poway (10-0). Fred Dunn scored 16 and Jerry Garrett added 12 for Oceanside.

San Pasqual 67, Mt. Carmel 66 (OT)--Dan Andrews scored on a jumper with 9 seconds remaining in overtime to give San Pasqual the victory. Mt. Carmel outscored San Pasqual, 21-14, in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. Mt. Carmel (6-4) took a 66-64 lead in overtime before Eric Meek made both ends of a 1-and-1 to set up Andrews’ winning basket. Meek led all scorers with 25 points and Bryan Banner added 15 for San Pasqual. Mike Graves led Mt. Carmel with 15 points.

Ft. Myers tournament

Torrey Pines 61, Martin County (Stuart, Fla.) 50--In the Ft. Myers Basketball Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla., Torrey Pines (12-0) reached the semifinals by defeating the Martin County (7-2), the seventh-ranked 4-A school in the state. Courtie Miller (17) and Darren Cox (15) paced Torrey Pines, which led, 32-25, at the half. Anthony Parson and Andy McWilliams led Martin County with 16 points apiece. Miller added 16 rebounds for Torrey Pines, who advances to tonight’s semifinal at 7 p.m. against Dunbar of Washington D.C. or North Ft. Myers, the tournament’s host.

Chino tournament

El Camino 77, Chino 61--Glen Ankton led El Camino with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals at Chino High. Travis Gilley added 15 points, two 3-pointers, for El Camino (6-3), and Todd Swanson had 11 points and 9 assists. El Camino plays Claremont today.

Girls’ basketball

Rohr/Aztec tournament

Carlsbad 48, Valhalla 38--Jeanette Best had 19 points for Valhalla in a losing effort.

El Centro Central 50, Lincoln 40--El Centro took a 23-6 first quarter lead and never let up at Montgomery. Lisa Trujillo (15) and Paula Holden (14) paced visiting El Centro. Sarah Dixon had a game high 23 points for Lincoln.

Fisher tournament

Oceanside 51, Serra 38--Kesha Fowlkes scored 20 points and Tonya Lee added 10 to lead Oceanside (8-2). Wendy Smith scored 18 points for Serra (1-7).

San Marcos 50, Chula Vista 41--Senior forward Susie O’Brien scored 34 of San Marcos’ 50 points on 13 field goals and 8 of 11 free throw shooting. San Marcos is 2-5.

Ramona tournament

Ramona 85, Imperial 18--Ramona had four players score in double figures at Ramona High. Chris Miller had 21 points, Meleea Van Patten had 17, Jennie Pinnow had 16 and Tina Brooklyn had 10 for Ramona (5-1). Miller also blocked 10 shots and had 10 rebounds.
