Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Barbito Leads Anaheim Past Cabrillo

Jude Barbito scored 29 points to lead Anaheim High School to a 74-63 victory over previously undefeated Cabrillo Thursday night in the semifinal round of the Canyon tournament at Canyon High.

The Colonists (6-4) took a 53-52 lead on a 3-pointer by Lupe Alverez with 4 minutes left. They never trailed again.

Anaheim’s Danny Castillo, who scored 26 points, made 3 free throws and Barbito added 2 down the stretch to clinch the victory.

Anaheim, which has 5 consecutive victories, made 13 3-pointers. Barbito made 7 of them.

The Colonists will play Newport Harbor in the championship game at 8 tonight.

In other Canyon tournament games:

San Francisco Lowell 76, Southern California Christian 61--Akili Jones scored 38 points to lead Lowell in a consolation semifinal game. Lowell outscored Southern California Christian, 27-11, in the third quarter to take a 59-40 lead.

Esperanza 58, La Mirada 54--Joe Foss scored 28 points to lead Esperanza in a consolation semifinal game.

Canyon 82, Canyon JV 50--Kevin Wilborn scored 23 points to lead Canyon in a consolation game.

In the Brea-Olinda tournament:

Brea-Olinda 69, Compton 63--Keith Walker had 31 points, including 5 3-point field goals as the Wildcats (9-5) advanced to the tournament championship game. Brea-Olinda led, 25-13, at the end of the first quarter. Matt Chamberlain scored 18 points for the Wildcats. Chamberlain and Walker each had 8 rebounds. Calvin Curry scored 23 points, including 7 3-point field goals, for Compton (10-2). Brea-Olinda will play St. Paul in the championship game tonight at 8:30.

St. Paul 106, Whittier Christian 60--The Swordsmen led, 28-8, and advanced to the championship game. Greg Willig and Art Villegas each scored 23 points for St. Paul (11-4). Jason Hart scored 22, including 6 3-point field goals for the Swordsmen. Paul McKinley scored 25 points for Whittier Christian (6-3).

San Marcos 75, Buena Park 42--Jay Kitti scored 23 points to lead San Marcos (3-6) in a consolation round game. Mark Hunt scored 16 points for Buena Park.

El Modena 72, Torrance 68--Robbie Pietsch scored 26 points to lead El Modena (10-3) in a consolation game.

The Vanguards led, 17-6, at the end of the first quarter. John Darrow scored 19 points for the Vanguards. Rick Robison scored 31 points and Art Terrill 26 for Torrance (4-5).

Sunny Hills 68, St. John Bosco 51--Marcus Hopkins had 20 points and Jeff White added 19 to lead Sunny Hills (8-4) into the consolation championship game against Bakersfield Foothill.

Sunny Hills led by, 37-31, at halftime, but outscored St. John Bosco, 15-4, in the third quarter to break the game open. St. John Bosco falls to 1-8.

El Dorado 80, La Habra 59--El Dorado had 5 players score in doubles figures, led by Travis Dowdell’s 16 points, in the consolation round game.

Matt Luke, who had 15, Mike Bradach (14), Jerome Facione (12) and Mike Renaud (11) also scored in double figures for El Dorado (7-4). James Clegg led La Habra (6-6) with 13 points.

In the Chandler (Ariz.) tournament:

La Quinta 96, Tucson Canyon del Oro 76--Scott Campbell had 30 points to lead La Quinta to the seventh-place game win.

Scott Linck added 24 points and Bill Snyder 16 for the Aztecs (5-4). Scott Santa Maria’s 24 points led Canyon del Oro.

Campbell set tournament records for points scored with 105 and average with 35 points a game.

In the Katella tournament:

Servite 60, Western 57--Jamie Rosenkranz scored 13 points and Chris Johnson 10 to lead Servite (8-4) in a championship semifinal game.

The Friars led 26-9 at the end of the first quarter and held off Western the rest of the way. Johnson had 6 assists and Steve Marusich had 10 rebounds for Servite.

Palos Verdes 61, Rancho Alamitos 60--Ian Chatsfield scored 27 points to lead Palos Verdes into the consolation championship game against Bell, a 68-59 winner over Gahr. David Green had 17 points and Jim Pavelec 13 for Rancho Alamitos.

In the Mt. Carmel tournament:

Woodbridge 67, Mira Mesa 65--Ramolis Taylor made 6 free throws in the fourth quarter as Woodbridge survived a fourth-quarter rally.

Woodbridge led by 11 points, 50-39, entering the final quarter but Mira Mesa made 4 3-point field goals to close the gap.

In the Nogales tournament:

Tustin 57, Seattle Newport 56--Guard Cheavly Ly made an 18-foot jumper with 2 seconds left to lift Tustin to the victory in the fifth-place semifinal game. Ly had a game-high 19 points for Tustin (8-3).

Phoung Tran added 13 for the Tillers, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half.

In the Pacifica tournament:

Magnolia 73, Cantwell 56--Jayson Nestor’s 25 points helped Magnolia reach tonight’s championship game. Jerry Jones added 18 for Magnolia, which plays Orange League rival Savanna tonight at 7.

Savanna 67, Troy 44--Eric Preuss scored 18 points to lead the Rebels in a championship semifinal game. Savanna led, 21-13, after the first quarter and 39-23 at halftime.

Pacifica 83, Loara 69--Dustin Bonham scored 40 points to lead Pacifica in a consolation semifinal game. Tes Whitlock scored 29 for Loara.

Westminster 48, Santiago 45--Tim Deitel scored 19 points to lead Westminster (3-7) in a consolation semifinal game.
