Christian Heritage in Title Game of Tournament

The Christian Heritage men’s basketball team advanced to the finals of the Hawaii Pacific tournament with a 94-88 victory over Alaska Fairbanks Friday at Bloch Arena on Pearl Harbor Naval Base.

Christian Heritage (11-2) will play host Hawaii Pacific in tonight’s championship game.

Eastern Michigan transfer Brad Soucie scored 34 points for Christian Heritage, and Mark Kraatz added 15 points and 13 assists. Andre Green had 26 points and 10 rebounds for Alaska Fairbanks.

Four UC San Diego players scored in double figures in an 82-59 victory over Gordon College in a tournament in La Jolla.

Bill Gerlach led UCSD (4-7) with 14 points, Erik Quigley and Rick Batt had 11 apiece, and Kirk Kramer added 10.

Mike Petrocelli scored 19 for Gordon College (4-7).

In the first game, Brian Horst scored 21 points to lead Millikin past Pomona Pitzer, 89-75.

Point Loma Nazarene (2-10) lost to Biola, 105-63, in the second round of a round-robin tournament at Point Loma.

Brian Thurston scored 17 points, Kevin Barberick had 14 and Mark Bulgin added 10 for Point Loma Nazarene.

Brandle Studevan led Biola (11-3) with 23 points.

In the first game, David Suddeth had 22 points as Trevecca (Tenn.) Nazarene College defeated Olivet (Ill.) Nazarene College, 87-85.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ann Duffy scored 17 points as Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 70-51, in the opening round of the Whittier tournament.

Shawndel Reddic added 12 points, and Camille Armijo and Shelly Stokes had 10 each for Point Loma Nazarene (8-4), which led at halftime, 40-24. Shannon Anderson had 10 rebounds for Point Loma Nazarene, which plays for the championship tonight at 8.

FOOTBALL

Mike Nelson, former San Diego State assistant coach, has been named defensive line coach at Kansas State, new KSU Coach Bill Snyder said. Nelson, 41, coached 2 seasons at SDSU under former Coach Denny Stolz, working with the defensive line and inside linebackers. He was one of five of Stolz’ assistant coaches who was not retained by new Coach Al Luginbill.

VOLLEYBALL

Debbie Hunter, head women’s coach at Southern Illionis University for the past 14 years, has been hired by the United State Volleyball Assn. as director, educational programs and services. Her responsibilities will be the continued development of the USVBA’s national coaching Accreditation Program and the creation of educational opportunities for coaches, officials and athletes.

The USA Women’s team will begin training for its 1989 season Tuesday at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.
