SportsScope : Muir Boys and Girls Lead Valley Into Sunkist Track Meet

Perennial track power Muir High of Pasadena heads the list of San Gabriel Valley schools in the prep division of the 30th annual Sunkist Invitational Indoor Track Meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the L.A. Sports Arena.

The Mustangs will have strong contenders in the boys and girls divisions of the meet, which will feature many of the top performers in the state.

Heading the list for the Muir girls are sprinters Inger Miller and Taminika Terry in the 60-yard dash. Miller, a junior, was one of the top sprinters in the state last season. Terry, a sophomore, won the youth division of The Athletics Congress Nationals last summer.

The Muir boys will be led by Marquette Ennis in the 500-yard run, triple jumper Chris Perry and miler Robert Nelson.

The Mustangs will also be represented in several relays. The girls will compete in the 640- and 1,600-yard relays, and the boys in the 640.

Other top girls from the valley include Karen Hecox of South Hills in the seeded mile and Ramona Caro of San Gabriel in the 880-yard run.

Among prominent boys from the valley are Billy Ivey of West Covina in the triple jump and long jump, Charles Rodgers of Baldwin Park in the triple jump, Scott Hempel of Walnut in the seeded two-mile, and Rick Provenzano of Arcadia and Derrick Mitchell of Pasadena in the 880-yard run.

Ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II in the first regular-season poll this week, the Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team faces Chapman and Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Assn. games this week.

The Broncos, 12-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play after an easy 95-48 win over UC Riverside last week, will visit Chapman at 5:45 p.m. today and play host to Dominguez Hills at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Kellogg Gym.

Pomona has been led by its all-conference tandem of center Niki Bracken (6-2) and guard Cathy Gooden (5-5). Bracken scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Gooden added 18 points in the victory over Riverside.

Other starters for the Broncos are forwards Susan Luckinbill (5-9) and Stephanie Coons (5-10) and guard Carrie Egan (5-8).

Chapman has a 1-0 conference record after defeating Dominguez Hills, 79-52, in the CCAA opener for both teams last week. Chapman is led by guard Corine Sandfry, who is averaging 15 points, and forward Kim Rieff, who averages 13.
