HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : City Section Boys : Late Kennedy Surge Drops Chatsworth, 45-43

Dana Dotson made 2 free throws with 8 seconds left to give Kennedy High a 45-43 victory over Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference game Wednesday at Chatsworth.

Dotson’s free throws--which broke a 43-43 tie--were his only points of the game and capped a 6-3 Kennedy run in the last 90 seconds of the game.

Randy Brown scored 6 of his team-high 20 points in the final period and also had 17 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for Kennedy (10-4, 3-1 in conference play).

Rick Garrick led Chatsworth (8-7, 1-3) with 25 points and 11 assists.

In another Northwest Valley Conference game:

Granada Hills 104, Canoga Park 46--The Hunters, a 3-A Division team, ended a two-week stretch of games against 4-A competition in lopsided fashion at home.

Canoga Park (2-11, 0-4) was outscored, 369-134, during the 4-game stretch. The Hunters begin West Valley League play against 3-A competition at Chatsworth on Friday.

John Johnson scored a game-high 20 points and Alvin Brown added 18 for Granada Hills (11-4, 3-1).

VALLEY PAC-8 CONFERENCE

North Hollywood 74, Poly 65--Poly led, 2-0, then never again.

Ed Davis, who led North Hollywood (9-4, 4-0) with 24 points, made 12 of 16 shots from the field and pulled down 13 rebounds. Junior center Dana Jones scored 18 points and had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Reseda 59, Sylmar 54--Mike Basowski scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting for the Regents at Reseda.

Basowski made 5 3-point shots and teammate Coley Kyman added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Reseda (5-8, 3-1).

Grant 62, Monroe 24--Monroe’s stall tactics did little to stop the Lancers, who assumed sole possession of first place in the East Valley League standings.

Troy Mcleod led Grant (11-3, 3-1) with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Nate Conner added 10 points and Setro Terzian had 8.

Birmingham 73, Van Nuys 69 (OT)--Glenn Sucich made a pair of free throws in the waning seconds of regulation to force overtime and teammate Danny Larson made 3 free throws in the extra period for Birmingham.

Sucich led the Braves (6-8, 2-2) with 17 points and Larson added 15. Birmingham employed a man-to-man defense in the second half that helped erase a 10-point second-half deficit.

NORTHERN CONFERENCE

Sherman Oaks CES 41, Verdugo Hills 35--Verdugo Hills double-teamed high-scoring Marcus Littlejohn but was unable to stop visiting Sherman Oaks.

Littlejohn, a senior guard averaging 26.2 points a game, was held to a season-low 10 points. Senior forward Donald Daily scored 10 points and Cleve McWright added 9 points and 12 rebounds in picking up some of the slack on offense.

Kent Purser, who is averaging 20 points, scored 17 to lead Verdugo Hills (1-5 in league play).
