HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Southern Section Boys : Newbury Park Makes Most of Lane’s Points

Sophomore guard Tim Lane made 2 free throws with 3 seconds to play as Newbury Park High edged Channel Islands, 53-52, Wednesday night in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.

“It all came down to fouls and free throws,” Channel Islands Coach Don Salado said.

Newbury Park (11-5, 2-3 in league play) made 13 of 20 free throws and Channel Islands (1-12, 0-5) converted 3 of 7. Channel Islands was called for 16 fouls, Newbury Park 11.

Newbury Park senior forward Wayne Cook, who has the flu and missed most of the first half, scored a game-high 25 points--23 in the second half. Cook connected on 3 3-point shots and had 8 rebounds.

Lane, whose free throws amounted to his only points, has made 28 of 30 free throws this season. He also had 8 assists.

Channel Islands was led by Jerry Santiago’s 17 points.

Thousand Oaks 52, Westlake 47--John Bushart scored 12 points and Darren McMaster added 8 as the Lancers upset Westlake in the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Leading by 6 points at the end of the first half, Thousand Oaks (7-9, 2-3) never let up. Kurt Schwan scored a game-high 17 points for Westlake (10-7, 3-2) and Jeff Maurer added 13.

Moorpark 64, Oak Park 50--Moorpark outrebounded Oak Park, 42-18, en route to its first league victory. Keith Orford scored a game-high 24 points for Moorpark and Scott Semer added 17.

Bel-Air Prep 82, Providence 65--Tim Edgar scored 31 points for Providence in the Delphic League game at Bel-Air Prep.
