High School Soccer : 2 Goals by Valdez Enable Monroe to Avenge Playoff Loss to Reseda

Reseda and Monroe High last met in in the semifinal round of the City Section soccer playoffs and the Regents prevailed on their way to the City title.

The roles were reversed in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Reseda on Wednesday as Monroe came from behind to defeat Reseda, 3-2, for its seventh consecutive victory.

The score was the same as in Reseda’s playoff victory of a year ago.

“It’s nice to beat them,” Monroe Coach Lee Sasvary said, “although there wasn’t as much at stake this time.”

Trailing, 2-1, at halftime, Monroe (7-0, 3-0 in league play), tied the score with 25 minutes left in the match on Jose Valdez’s second goal.

The Vikings took the lead for good on a goal by Geraldo Diaz 10 minutes later.

Valdez gave Monroe an early lead, but Reseda (0-3-1) rebounded on goals by Teddy Davila and Jesus Lopez.

“We’re playing well right now,” Sasvary said. “We have to because we’re one of the favorites this year. Everyone wants to beat us.”

Poly 3, Grant 0--Edgar Rivera scored 2 goals and Jose Consuegra added another as the Parrots evened their Valley Pac-8 Conference record at 2-2 (4-3-1 overall) with the win at Poly.

Juan Nambo recorded 2 assists and Monir Beria had one.

Lewis Elliot stopped 12 shots and recorded his fourth shutout.

Granada Hills 2, Canoga Park 1--Paul Reineke and Kelly Brockway each scored for Granada Hills in the Northwest Valley Conference game at Canoga Park.

Reineke scored at the 7:30 mark of the first half and Brockway scored off a corner kick by Gavin Small in the final seconds of the first half.

Granada Hills is 5-1-1 and 3-1 in league play. Canoga Park is 0-3-1 in league play.

Cleveland 1, Taft 1--Frank Diana scored off a direct kick midway through the first half to give Cleveland (3-3-2, 2-0-2) a tie in the Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.

Chatsworth 1, Kennedy 1--Steve Zanutto chased down a loose ball and booted it into the net 10 minutes into the second half to give Chatsworth a Northwest Valley Conference tie at Chatsworth.

Keith West scored a first-half goal for Kennedy (3-2-3, 1-0-3).

Chatsworth improved to 6-3-3, 1-0-3 in league play.

GIRLS

Cleveland 3, Venice 0--Julie Murillo, Jennifer Ross and Mary Kate Costello each scored for Cleveland (4-4, 3-1) in a Northern League match at Cleveland.

Chatsworth 3, Kennedy 2--Kris Bassler recorded a hat trick, including the winning goal on a breakaway late in the first half in the Northwest League match at Kennedy.
