THE PREPS : Olympic League Basketball Roundup : Big Third Quarter Boosts Whittier Christian

Guard Paul McKinley scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter to help lead Whittier Christian High School to a 69-66 victory over Valley Christian in an Olympic League basketball game Friday at Whittier Christian.

Whittier Christian went on a 25-14 run to take the lead, 53-47, in the third quarter. Scott Ferguson added 18 points and Matt Riehm 12 for Whittier Christian (13-4, 6-1) , which trails league-leading Orange Lutheran by a game.

Orange Lutheran 98, Whitney 71--Kent Dowding scored 22 points to lead visiting Orange Lutheran (14-3, 7-0). Daryl Cole added 19, Jason Neben 16 and Luke Aucoin 12 for Orange Lutheran. The Lancers used a fast-break offense to open a 30-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led, 52-29, at the half.

Santa Margarita 56, Capistrano Valley Christian 35--Dan Bathey scored 12 points and Jeff Layne 11 to leaed host Santa Margarita (7-8, 2-5). Bathey also had 8 rebounds.
