Women’s Basketball : Chapman Upsets CSUN in Convincing Fashion

So much for that showdown with second-ranked Cal Poly Pomona.

Cal State Northridge, hopeful that this might be the year to dethrone Pomona as queen of the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., had the wind pinched from its sails by Chapman College, 69-59, Thursday at the CSUN gym.

Chapman outshot and outrebounded 16th-ranked CSUN in handing the Lady Matadors their first loss in 6 games. The Lady Panthers shot 46.7% from the field compared to 32.8% for Northridge. Chapman held a 43-38 rebounding edge.

Guard Corine Sandry scored a game-high 22 points in only 27 minutes for Chapman. The Lady Panthers also got 13 points from center Christine Carroll, who added a game-high 15 rebounds.

Northridge was led by center Chris Cavalin, who scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Julie Arlotto added 11 points and 9 rebounds for CSUN.

The Lady Panthers improved to 8-9, 3-1 in the CCAA. Northridge fell to 14-4, 2-1.

Master’s 53, Cal Lutheran 50--Kim Vargas launched a 3-point shot on the run that banked in off the backboard as time expired to give Master’s its fifth District 3 victory.

Master’s got the ball after Cal Lutheran’s Leslie Stephens missed a 10-foot baseline jump shot that spun around the rim before falling out of bounds.

Master’s had trailed, 50-46, with 1:11 remaining.
