Statwatch : Harris’ Spree Ends; Cleveland Rolls On

Share

It took a game played at a snail’s pace to put the brakes to Lucious Harris’ hot streak. The Cleveland High forward was held to 10 points in a 45-42 North Valley League victory over Taft last week, ending a streak of 11 consecutive starts in which he had scored 20 or more points.

Harris started the roll in mid-December with 29 points against Crossroads and continued the streak in the Las Vegas Holiday tournament in late December. Harris was named the tournament MVP and the Cavaliers won the 30-team tournament with a 5-game sweep. In the first game after returning home, Harris was ill and did not start in a nonconference game against Gardena, yet he came off the bench and scored 13 points in 1 1/2 quarters of play.

Before the win over Taft, in which the Toreadors intentionally slowed the tempo, Harris averaged 28.4 points in 5 Northwest Valley Conference games.

The senior started another streak with a 21-point performance in Friday’s win over Kennedy. He is averaging 21.4 points and has scored in double figures in all 19 games.

Streaks: Cleveland (17-2) extended its winning streak to 14 with an 82-42 thrashing of Kennedy last Friday. The Cavaliers are averaging 85.4 points a game and allowing 59.8. They have scored more than 80 points in 13 of 19 games, 90 or more in 7 games and 100 or more in 3 games.

North Hollywood (12-4) has won 8 consecutive games and has a 10-1 record with Dana Jones in the lineup. The Huskies were 2-3 when the 6-6 junior center was sidelined by a sprained left wrist.

Rio Mesa has won its 10 league games by an average of 13.9 points. Interestingly, the Spartans’ 2 closest games--victories by 1 and 7 points--were against Oxnard, which has lost 8 of 10 league games.

Scoring: Newbury Park’s leaders in 3-point shooting are Chris Falzone (22 of 51, 43.1%), Wayne Cook (22 of 52, 42.3%) and Tim Lane (11 of 26, 42.3%). The rest of the Panthers have made only 14 of 61 for 23%. . . . Burroughs point guard Marnie Calderon has made 38 of 79 (41%) 3-point shots.
