Boys’ Roundup : El Toro Allows 1 Point in 1st Half, Beats San Clemente, 62-33

El Toro High School scored the first 22 points and held San Clemente to 1 point in the first half of a 62-33 South Coast League basketball victory Wednesday at El Toro.

The Chargers (13-9, 3-4) led, 12-0, at the end of the first quarter and 22-0 midway through the second quarter before Eddie Morgan made a free throw. El Toro led, 28-1, at halftime.

Rob Johnson scored 19 points and Greg Everett 12 for El Toro. Jason Dunahee scored 12 points for San Clemente (4-15, 1-6).

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 74, Mission Viejo 50--Chris Kostoff scored 20 points and Scott McCorkle 19 to lead the host Cougars (17-4, 7-0). Capistrano Valley led, 24-12, after the first quarter and 38-21 at halftime. Eric Cramer scored 15 points for Mission Viejo (8-12, 3-4).

Irvine 53, Dana Hills 38--Bryan Allred scored 20 points to lead Irvine (20-3, 6-1) at Dana Hills. Kevin O’Neill scored 12 points for Dana Hills (13-11, 1-6).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 88, Katella 59--Matt Luke had 13 points and 24 rebounds to lead visiting El Dorado, the league’s first-place team. El Dorado, which has won 11 in a row, led, 44-24, at halftime. Mike Bradach had 21 points and Jeff Cardenas 17 for El Dorado (17-4, 7-0). Brian Yourstone had 20 to lead Katella (6-13, 2-5).

Los Alamitos 76, Loara 58--Tes Whitlock of Loara had a game-high 29 points, but it wasn’t enough. Los Alamitos outscored Loara, 32-12, in the fourth quarter. Robert Conlisk 16 points and Todd Chesebro 14 for Los Alamitos (10-12, 5-2). Loara is 4-14, 2-5.

Esperanza 68, Cypress 64--Moose Pope and Joe Foss each scored 17 points to lead Esperanza (7-14, 1-6) to its first league victory. Mark Johnson scored 25 points for Cypress (9-12, 4-3).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 76, Troy 63--Curtis Morris scored 22 points and Pete Bach 19 to lead Fullerton 14-5, 7-0) at Troy. The Indians led, 32-30, at halftime and outscored the Warriors, 21-15, in the third quarter to take a 53-45 lead. Richard Wesley scored 19 points and John Lowe 13 for Troy (5-14, 1-6).

La Habra 63, Buena Park 52--Tim Moore scored 18 points and David Stevens 16 to lead host La Habra (11-9, 5-2). The victory clinches a playoff spot for La Habra for the first time in five seasons. The Highlanders are in third place, three games ahead of fourth-place Sonora with three games remaining. La Habra has defeated the Raiders twice this season. Richard Harvey scored 15 points for Buena Park (0-16, 0-7).

Sunny Hills 76, Sonora 51--Brett Mitchelson had a game-high 20 points to lead visiting Sunny Hills. Walter Mitter added 13 points and Marcus Hopkins 12 for Sunny Hills (14-7, 6-1). Greg Farlow had 16 points for Sonora (7-13, 2-5).

Edison 64, Fountain Valley 58--Bill Martineau scored a game-high 20 points to lead Edison (11-12, 4-3) at Fountain Valley. Fountain Valley (16-5, 4-3) had an off night shooting, making just 20 of 61 shots from the floor for 33%. Tom Weaver led Fountain Valley with 15 points and Mike Merli added 14.

Huntington Beach 65, Marina 61--Andy Thompson scored 22 points, including 2 free throws in the last minute, for Huntington Beach (11-9, 6-1) at Marina. Cherokee Parks had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Marina (9-13, 2-5).

Ocean View 64, Westminster 51--Todd Norman had 18 points and Mike Frohn 14 for visiting Ocean View. The Seahawks (15-6, 5-2) led, 18-9, at the end of the first quarter and gradually pulled away. Tim Dietel had 17 to lead Westminster (3-16, 0-7).
