Kopp Makes Commitment to Pacific

Troy Kopp, Orange County’s No. 1-rated quarterback last season while playing at Mission Viejo High School, said Wednesday he has made an oral commitment to attend the University of the Pacific.

Kopp, an all-South Coast League selection who led the Diablos to two consecutive league championships, passed for 1,796 yards and 19 touchdowns with only eight interceptions in 171 attempts during the 1988 regular season.

He said the main reason he chose UOP was new head coach Walt Harris, who has been offensive coordinator at Illinois and Tennessee.

“He’s got a good history of producing good quarterbacks,” Kopp said. “He had Tony Robinson and Jeff Francis at Tennessee and Tony Eason and Dave Wilson at Illinois.”

Also committing Wednesday was Servite’s Vince Saldivar, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound defensive end, who said he will attend Washington State.

Saldivar, an All-Angelus League selection, led his team in sacks with 9 and was second in tackles with 65.
