LOCAL : Residents in Tehachapis Dig Out; CalTrans Gives I-5 Traffic Go Sign
Interstate 5--closed since Tuesday night--was reopened this morning after California Department of Transportation crews cleared away the remains of 5-foot snowdrifts in the mountains north of Los Angeles.
About 4,500 residents in the Tehachapi mountain communities of Lebec, Gorman, Holiday Valley and Frazier Park, stranded by one of the heaviest snowfalls in decades, began digging out this morning as the sun broke through shortly after dawn.
Four lanes of I-5 were opened with California Highway Patrol escort at 6 a.m., and by noon, traffic flowed freely in both directions.
