Pacific 10 Roundup : Oregon Holds Elliott in Check, but No. 1 Arizona Rolls to Win

Anthony Cook scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots to lead top-ranked Arizona to a 78-57 victory over Oregon in a Pacific 10 Conference game Thursday night at Eugene, Ore.

Jud Buechler added 16 points and Matt Othick scored 15 for Arizona, 18-2 overall, 12-1 in Pac-10 play.

Oregon (8-13, 3-8) held Sean Elliott, Arizona’s All-American forward, to 10 points, his lowest total of the season. Earlier this season, he scored only 11 points against Oregon and Oregon State.

Oregon was within 39-33 at halftime, but Arizona opened the second half with eight consecutive points for a 47-33 lead with 16:18 to play. The Wildcats built their lead to 78-54 with seven consecutive points late in the game.

Frank Johnson, Keith Reynolds and Richard Lucas each scored 12 points for Oregon, which made just 30% of its shots in the second half.

Stanford 65, Washington State 53--Todd Lichti scored eight of his 20 points in the last seven minutes and the No. 18 Cardinal beat the Cougars at Palo Alto.

Washington State (7-13, 2-9) was within 45-44 with seven minutes left when Lichti hit a field goal, Eric Reveno made two free throws and Scott Meinert hit a three-point shot to give Stanford (18-5, 9-3) a 52-46 lead.

Darryl Woods hit one of two free throws for the Cougars, but Reveno made two free throws and Meinert, Lichti and Bryan McSweeney added field goals to give Stanford a 62-47 lead with one minute left.

Brian Quinett had 14 points for Washington State.

California 84, Washington 70--Keith Smith had 22 points and 11 assists as the Bears pulled away from the Huskies in the closing minutes at Berkeley.

Cal (16-7, 7-5) was nursing a 61-60 lead with 3:34 left when Smith had seven points and two assists in an 18-2 surge.

Eldridge Recasner had 18 points for Washington (9-12, 5-7). Leonard Taylor added 20 points and seven rebounds for Cal.

Oregon State 89, Arizona State 83--Gary Payton scored 23 of his 30 points in the first half as the Beavers downed the Sun Devils at Corvallis, Ore.

Matt Anderson scored 22 points for Arizona State (10-11, 3-9), which got to within 80-79 before Oregon State (15-5, 8-4) finished with a 9-4 run.

Eric Knox added 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Beavers. Will Brantley added 15 points and 9 assists.
