PREP BASKETBALL : South Coast League Roundup : Mission Viejo Takes Care of El Toro Down the Stretch, 65-62

Jim Butchko scored 19 points to lead Mission Viejo High School to a 65-62 victory over El Toro Friday night in a South Coast League basketball game at Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo trailed, 34-29, at halftime, but, sparked by Mick Cramer’s five points, outscored El Toro, 15-12, in the third quarter to trail by only 46-44.

In the fourth quarter, El Toro, which played a full-court press through the first half, seemed to tire, as Mission Viejo outscored the Chargers, 21-16.

Cramer added 17 points to help Mission Viejo (11-12, 6-4), which finished third in league standings and will play in the Southern Section 4-AA playoffs.

Rob Johnson scored 14 points and Khari Johnson 10 to lead El Toro (13-12, 3-7).

Capistrano Valley 62, Dana Hills 55--Chris Kostoff scored 20 points to lead league-champion Capistrano Valley (20-4, 10-0) at home.

Scott McCorkle added 17 points for Capistrano Valley, which advances to the Southern Section 5-A playoffs.

Dana Hills took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter, but Capistrano Valley outscored the Dolphins, 15-6, in the second quarter to take a 25-19 halftime lead and never relinquished the lead after that.

Kevin O’Neil scored 15 points to lead Dana Hills (15-12, 3-7), John Lloyd added 13 and Mike Fedden 10.

Irvine 76, San Clemente 32--Bryan Allred scored 19 points to lead Irvine (21-5, 7-3) at home.

Irvine led, 17-6, after the first quarter, and 29-10, at halftime.

Raphael Molle had 11 points and Tom Bulone 10 to help Irvine, which finished second in league standings and advances to the 5-A playoffs.

Sophomore John Molle had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with nine points to help Irvine.

Todd Anderson had 12 points to lead San Clemente (4-18, 1-9).
