Basketball Roundup : Valhalla’s Clark Scores 55 Against Santana

Valhalla’s Tony Clark, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, scored 55 points for third place on the all-time San Diego County scoring list for points in a game and lead visiting Valhalla to a 105-82 victory over Santana, clinching a tie for the championship in the Grossmont 2-A League.

“When your in sync like that, it’s hard to stop,” Valhalla Coach Manny Silva said.

Clark scored 16 points each in the first, third and fourth quarters and seven in the second. He missed just four shots.

Matt Panebianco had 33 for Santana. Valhalla is 15-8, 5-0.

Palomar League

Poway 57, Fallbrook 48--Host Poway returned to early season shooting form, converting 56% from the field. Jay Blankenbeckler led all scorers with 15 points and had five steals. Poway (19-3, 8-3) never led by less than six in the second half.

Torrey Pines 74, San Dieguito 57--Courtie Miller scored a game-high 24 points and had nine rebounds and five blocks. The top-ranked Falcons (25-1, 10-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead. San Dieguito didn’t score until 4:35 remained in the first quarter. Kevin Flanagan and Kyle Armstrong each had 12 for Torrey Pines.

Avocado League

El Camino 57, Escondido 40--Visiting El Camino outscored Escondido, 27-12, in the second and third quarters en route to the victory. Dee Boyer’s 20 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots paced the Wildcats. Teammate Todd Swanson added six points and six assists. Brooks Barnhard led Escondido with 17 points. El Camino improved to 18-5, 11-1; Escondido dropped to 11-10, 6-6.

Rancho Buena Vista 64, Ramona 57--The score was tied, 30-30, at halftime and Rancho Buena Vista scored the first eight points of the second half. Darryll Parker scored 27 points and Todd Fellars added 13 for Rancho Buena Vista.

City Central League

Christian 57, Hoover 47--David Jeremiah led Christian (12-9, 4-4) with a game-high 20 points. Christian led, 28-16, at halftime.

Lincoln 92, Crawford 62--Aaron Wilhite (22), Joe Temple (20), and John McCartney (19) led Lincoln scorers. Lincoln improved to 23-1, 8-0; Crawford dropped to 15-7, 5-3. Fay Gordon led Crawford with 10 points. Only five players scored for Crawford. Daryl McMillan (13) was Lincoln’s fourth player to score in double figures.

San Diego 93, St. Augustine 57--Milton Miller’s 24-point effort led San Diego over visiting St. Augustine, and improved to 15-4, 6-2. St. Augustine’s Mossuto brothers, Mike and Paul, scored 23 and 15 points. The Saints dropped to 2-18, 1-7. Clark James and Raynard Wells added 18 and 11 points for San Diego.

Metro Conference

Southwest 113, Bonita Vista 57--Five players scored in double figures as Southwest set a school record for points in a game. Adalberto Silva led No. 3 Southwest (19-6, 11-1). Will Tate scored 23, and Art Balce added 17 for Southwest, which led, 60-33, at the half. Southwest scored 34 points in the second quarter and outscored Bonita Vista, 32-8, in the third quarter. Alan McNamee scored 19 points to lead Bonita Vista.

Chula Vista 69, Castle Park 56--Daniel Johnson scored 18 to lead visiting Chula Vista, which improved to 10-3 in league. Brad Grady had 18 for Castle Park, including five three-pointers. Richie Greaser added 16 for Chula Vista.

Coronado 66, Mar Vista 40--Jesse McNeill scored 19 points, and Tom Mitchell scored 12 for Coronado (9-13, 6-4). Mar Vista is 5-16, 4-6.

Sweetwater 47, Marian 35--Carlos Campbell led Sweetwater (23-2, 12-1) with 13 points and eight rebounds. Joe McDowell added nine points and six rebounds. Sweetwater had a 20-point lead going into the fourth quarter. Marian is now 4-14 and 4-8 in league.

City Eastern

Serra 53, Patrick Henry 52--Conrad Jones hit a three-pointer in the final minute to put Serra up by three. Patrick Henry made two free throws and got the ball back after Serra missed the front end of a one-and-one. Terence Hamilton’s shot in the final seconds was blocked by Keith Ladue. Jermaine Jordan led Serra (11-9, 4-4) with a game-high 23 points.

City West League

Mission Bay 76, Kearny 54--Mission Bay moved into a first-place tie with La Jolla led by Peter Wilson, who scored 20 points. Kearny (11-12, 3-5) was led by Andre White, who scored 22. Mission Bay (14-6, 6-2) converted 16 of 21 free throws.

La Jolla 46, Clairemont 43--Clairemont (11-14, 3-5) had a scoreless first quarter and had to play catch-up the rest of the game. La Jolla (14-8, 6-2), which was up by 11 points going into the second quarter, led, 22-18, at halftime. Adam Kleid led La Jolla with 19 points.

Grossmont 3-A League

Monte Vista 71, Granite Hills 64--With the victory, Monte Vista clinched at least a tie and took a game lead over Helix for the league title. Joe McNaull led Monte Vista with 22 points, and teammate Jeff Polinsky added 18. For Granite Hills (15-8, 3-4), Mark Phillips had 23 points. The Monarchs (15-4, 7-0) meet Helix Tuesday to determine the league championship.

Girls

City Eastern League

Point Loma 56, Mira Mesa 33--Chris Drumm (18), Monica Filer (17) and Tyeast Brown (16) combined for all but five of Point Loma’s points. Filer, with 13 assists, set a section record with 686 career assists, breaking Coronado’s Tami Fick’s record of 670 set from 1976-79. Filer also owns the single-game assist record and is 11 away from breaking the single season assist record of 312 by Fick in 1978. The Pointers improved to 24-1, 8-0. Mira Mesa, led by Tweet Castillo’s 13 points, dropped to 16-7, 5-3.

City Central League

Christian 67, Hoover 40--Erika Jonte scored a game-high 30 points to lead Christian (10-9, 4-4). Tiffany Stutz added 14.

OLP 58, San Diego 52--San Diego (9-12, 6-3) was up by five points but lost the lead with two minutes remaining. Tammy Tavares and April Beauparlant each scored 15 points for Our Lady of Peace (17-5, 7-1).

Avocado League

Oceanside 66, San Pasqual 39--Mildred Conston scored a game-high 28 to lead visiting Oceanside (17-7, 10-2). Kecha Fowlkes added 16.

Santana 67, Valhalla 34--Rebecca Aase scored 24 to lead host Sanatana (19-2, 6-0). Stephanie Thompson added 22.

City Eastern League

Patrick Henry 48, Serra 47--Lynn Thoms made a layup with six seconds remaining to bring Serra (4-16, 1-7) within a point. Patrick Henry (16-4, 6-2) led, 23-15, at halftime. Rochelle Johnson scored 20 points and had 20 rebounds for Patrick Henry.
