One man was killed and two people were injured Saturday when the driver of a pickup that was sideswiped on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach lost control and collided with another vehicle, authorities said.

Paul Proios, 27, of Costa Mesa was pronounced dead at the scene after his car was hit on the driver’s side and then flipped over. His wife, Lisa Proios, 23, was in serious condition at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center with broken ribs, Huntington Beach police said.

Mary Lieber, 44, of Huntington Beach, the driver of the other vehicle, was also listed in serious condition at the hospital with a broken collarbone.

The accident occurred about 2:20 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway, just west of the Santa Ana River bridge and east of Brookhurst Street.

Authorities said Lieber was westbound on the highway in a pickup when a gold station wagon with several men inside swerved into her lane, forcing her onto the sandy shoulder.

The pickup swerved across the westbound lanes and into the eastbound lanes, striking Proios’ car and causing both vehicles to flip over.
