Pacific 10 Roundup : Arizona State Finishes Strong, Gives Schermerhorn First Win

Torin Williams made four straight free throws in the final 37 seconds to lead Arizona State to a 98-94 victory over Oregon in a Pacific 10 Conference game Saturday at Eugene, Ore.

The victory was the first in three tries for Bob Schermerhorn since he became interim head coach at Arizona State. It moved the Sun Devils, 11-11 overall, into seventh place ahead of Oregon with a 4-9 record in the Pac-10. Oregon is 8-14 and 3-9.

The Sun Devils trailed the entire second half until a basket by substitute center Emory Lewis put them in front, 88-87, with 2:30 to play.

Oregon briefly regained the lead, 89-88, on a shot by forward Randy Grant with 2:10 to go, but a Williams basket and two free throws put Arizona State in front, 92-89, with 1:10 to play.

Oregon guard Frank Johnson tied the game on a three-point basket with 51 seconds left before Williams gave the Sun Devils their victory margin.

Arizona State was led by center Trent Edwards, who had 25 points before fouling out with 2:58 to play. Williams had 22 points, and Johnson led Oregon with 24.

California 86, Washington St. 69--Leonard Taylor scored 28 points to lead the Bears at Berkeley.

California (17-7, 8-5) went on an 8-0 run to take a 56-35 lead with 11:32 left in the game.

Brian Quinnett scored 17 points to lead the Cougars (7-14, 2-10).

California, which led by as many as 27 points, had four of its five starters score in double figures. Matt Beeuwsaert scored 11 points and led the Bears with 8 assists.
