Jim Carter, one of the final finishers Friday, retained the lead after two rounds of the rain-shortened Hawaiian Open at Honolulu.

Continuing heavy rains and a flooded Waialae Country Club course forced officials to delay the second round and reduce the tournament to a three-round, 54-hole format, with the final round scheduled today.

Carter, seeking the first victory of a three-year PGA Tour career, held a two-stroke advantage with a 36-hole total of 130, 14 under par.

Heavy overnight rains flooded the course Friday and forced a three-hour delay in the start of play.

With the delay, 66 players were unable to complete their rounds before darkness Friday.

They returned Saturday to resume play, only to encounter more heavy rains and an again-flooded course. After two more long delays, the second round was completed 32 hours and 2 minutes after its scheduled start.

Of the Saturday finishers, David Ogrin (67) and Chip Beck (64) were in the best position.

Ogrin is tied with Gene Sauers for second at 132. Beck joined Tim Simpson and Mark Brooks at 133.

Larry Mowry birdied the 18th hole to complete a bogey-free 65 for a 208 total and a three-shot lead over Al Geiberger and Miller Barber after three rounds of the 50th PGA Seniors Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Geiberger, who shot 72 for a 211 total, lost sole possession of the lead when he bogeyed No. 14 and fell three shots back when the 52-year-old Mowry birdied No. 18 with a 10-foot putt and Geiberger took a double-bogey 7.

Barber grabbed a share of second place with a roller-coaster 70 featuring four birdies, an eagle, two bogeys and a double bogey. Hill was next at 212 after shooting 74.
