College Roundup : Smiley, Sterbens Lead Moorpark Women to 2nd Consecutive WSC Title

Behind Susie Smiley’s 12 points and Kristie Sterbens’ 11 points, the Moorpark College women’s basketball team defeated visiting Santa Barbara, 59-51, Saturday to clinch its second consecutive Western State Conference Northern Division title.

Kerrie Marshall came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds for Moorpark (20-7, 8-3 in conference play). The Lady Raiders have won 20 or more games in each of the past three seasons.

In other women’s games:

Valley 74, Santa Monica 68--The Lady Monarchs converted a season-high 65% of their field-goal attempts to win their eighth WSC game in a row at Santa Monica.

Sandrine Rocher came off the bench to lead Valley (24-3, 9-1) with 16 points. Ruth Aguilar and Tisa Rush each added 15.

CS Northridge 74, Cal Poly SLO 47--Julie Arlotto had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Matadors in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at CSUN.

Northridge (17-6, 5-3) made 47.6% of its field-goal attempts. Bridgette Ealy scored 14 points and had seven rebounds and Paula Lucas added 10 points for the Lady Matadors.

Canyons 71, Glendale 59--Tressie Millender had 28 points and 15 rebounds for Canyons in a WSC game at Glendale.

Canyons went on a 6-0 run to take a 36-21 lead early in the second half. Glendale staged a brief rally late in the game, trimming Canyons’ lead to 51-43, but Millender and Debbie Bernard, who combined for 42 points, helped the Lady Cougars regain control.

Azusa Pacific 69, Cal Lutheran 63--Heidi Griffith scored 26 points and Dani Elton added 18 points for the Regals (6-14, 3-5) in the Golden State Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale 82, Canyons 75--The Vaqueros continued their mastery over Canyons in the WSC game at Glendale.

Perfection was not, however, what Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin saw in the first half as the Vaqueros (16-10, 7-5) squandered a 20-11 lead and fell into a 38-38 halftime tie.

Canyons guard Larry Allbritton made a three-point basket to give Canyons its first lead at 36-35 in the closing minutes of the first half.

Aaron Clark scored a game-high 21 points for Canyons (13-16, 4-8).

Cal Lutheran 86, Azusa Pacific 82--The Kingsmen outscored Azusa Pacific, 6-2, in the last two minutes to clinch the GSAC victory at Cal Lutheran.

Mike Demeter led Cal Lutheran (9-15, 2-7) with 21 points and Steve deLaveaga added 19. Trailing, 45-42, at halftime, Cal Lutheran outscored Azusa Pacific, 44-37, in the second half.

The Master’s 105, Southwestern (Phoenix, Ariz.) 63--Six players scored in double figures for the Mustangs in a nonconference game at The Master’s.

David Moore (15 points), Jason Webster (14), Gerald Thomas (12), Phil Hahn (12), Stuart Epperson (10) and Rocky Shipes (10) led the way as Master’s (13-12) rolled to a 57-24 halftime lead.

Santa Barbara 81, Moorpark 57--The Raiders fell to 16-12, 6-6 in the Western State Conference despite a school-record 27 rebounds by Greg Taylor. Taylor’s total surpassed Rick Dyess’ 26, set against L. A. Trade Tech in the 1968-69 season.

BASEBALL

Cerritos 5, Canyons 1--Tom Diaz limited the Cougars to three hits in a nonconference game at Cerritos.

Canyons (2-2) scored its only run in the seventh when Donnie Pedersen led off with a triple and scored on Ernie Perez’s single.

Ventura 7, Mission 0--Brent Cookson’s two-run triple in the fifth inning led the Pirates in a nonconference game at Mission.

Jose Garcia (0-1), who allowed only one hit--but four runs--in five innings took the loss.

Valley 3, Kings River 1--Tim DeGrasse allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings and Steve Slattery worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth inning for the Monarchs in the Kings River tournament. Greg Struhl doubled and tripled and Ray Sabado tripled for Valley (2-0).

Moorpark 13, Victor Valley 4--Kris Kaelin hit two home runs and Darin Furlong went 4 for 5 with a two-run triple in the nonconference game at Victor Valley.

Willie Leighton started for the Raiders (3-0) and went to the seventh to pick up his first win.

UC San Diego 4-3, Cal Lutheran 2-5--Cal Lutheran rallied in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at UC San Diego to earn a split as pitcher Kevin O’Neill picked up his first win.

Cal Lutheran (2-1) had just one hit in the first game. Trailing, 2-0, in the second game, the Kingsmen scored four in the fourth and one in the seventh.

Master’s 2, Dominguez Hills 2--After 13 innings, darkness ended the nonconference game at Dominguez Hills. Mustang pitcher Jeff Cole give up just four hits in 8 2/3 innings.

Master’s (0-4-1) scored both of its runs in the seventh, when Jeff Peterson doubled home Peter Wilson and scored on a throwing error.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Only one Cal Lutheran player managed to win a set in the second round of an invitational tournament hosted by Cal State Bakersfield at Twin Lakes Racquet Club in Las Vegas.

Marja Helsten of CLU won the second set of her No. 3 singles match against Dawn Blysma of UC Riverside, but lost the match, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. Chapman, 15-0, 15-6, 15-5--Raphael Tulino recorded 10 kills and Chris Faucher added eight for Northridge in the nonconference match at Chapman.
