The Philadelphia 76ers announced today the signing of free agent guard Derek Smith, who was waived last week by the Sacramento Kings.

Smith, 27, who had a full season and a buyout option on an additional season, reportedly settled with the Kings for $2.3 million over seven years. The 76ers have to pay him $40,000, the prorated minimum NBA season.

“We’re pleased to be able to sign a player of Derek’s stature,” said coach Jim Lynam. “He will add to our versatility and without question strengthen our bench.”

Smith, who has a history of knee trouble, averaged 10 points and shot 42.2% from the floor in 29 games for the Kings this season. He and Kings coach Jerry Reynolds had problems and Smith was suspended before being cut.
