Southern Section Girls’ Basketball : Morningside Uses Its Height to Slow Down Glendale, 68-37

Morningside High School took advantage of its height Saturday night to defeat Glendale, 68-37, in a Southern Section 5-AA girls’ second-round game at Glendale High.

Junior Lisa Leslie, a 6-foot-5 center, had 31 points, 23 rebounds and 10 assists, and freshman Janet Davis, a 6-3 forward, added 12 points and 10 rebounds against Glendale, which had no starter taller than 5-9.

Point guard Jo Jo Witherspoon had 14 points and 10 assists for the Monarchs (26-1), whose only loss was to Southern High of Louisville, Ky. Glendale (16-7) was led by Angela Arminderez, who scored eight points, and Lia Pedrozian, who finished with six.

In other Southern Section second-round games:

Schurr 63, Lynwood 62--Cameron Inouye of Schurr (19-8) made a five-foot shot with 4:30 remaining to give the Spartans the lead for good, 58-59, in the 5-AA game at Schurr High. Inouye, who scored a game-high 25 points, later made two free throws with 30 seconds left to give Schurr a lead 63-60 lead. Lashanda Sanders brought Lynwood to within one, 63-62, with a 15-foot shot with 20 seconds remaining. Schurr inbounded the ball and ran the clock down to 2 seconds before Debbie Kotani missed a shot. Lynwood rebounded the ball and called a timeout but Makeba Field stepped on the out of bounds line while trying to inbound the ball. Schurr then ran out the clock. Linda Watson led Lynwood (21-8) with 19 points.

Hart 65, Norco 35--Sara Wilson, a 6-3 junior forward, scored 22 points and had 12 rebound to led second-seeded Hart to a 5-A Division victory at Hart. Freshman Anjanette Dion added 16 for the Indians. Hart (22-1) fell behind, 6-2, but then went on a 13-0 run and was never threatened. Norco (15-11) was led by Maria Valasquez and Bobbie White with 13 points apiece.

Anaheim Canyon 69, Kennedy 46--Keri Erkenbrack had 31 points and 13 rebounds to lead second-seeded Canyon (20-4) to a 4-AA Division victory at Canyon High. Michelle Harris had 22 points for Kennedy (11-10).

Los Altos 49, Cypress 41--Susan Peters scored 27 points and had 17 rebounds as Los Altos (16-1) won a 4-A Division game against visiting Cypress (19-8). Erica Manning, who finished with a team-high 15 points, led Cypress to an 11-10 lead early in the second quarter but Los Altos then took control.

Artesia 60, Loara 53 (OT)--Lesia Smith scored 29 points, including eight in overtime, to led Artesia (18-5) to a 4-A Division victory at Loara in Anaheim. Monique Tweebeeke made the first of a one-and-one at the end of regulation to tie the score at 50.

Brea-Olinda 95, Sierra Vista 44--The top-seeded Wildcats (24-2) got 24 points from Tammy Blackburn and 20 points and 10 assists from Aimee McDaniel to win the 3-A Division game at Brea.

La Quinta 68, Foothill 45--Amy Jalewalia, the Southern Section’s leading scorer, had 25 points and 12 rebounds as La Quinta (22-3) defeated Foothill in a 3-A Division game at La Quinta High.
