The Mater Dei High School girls’ soccer team scored five goals in the second half for a 6-1 victory over Orange Friday in a Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal at Orange.

The second-seeded Monarchs (22-4-2) broke a 1-1 tie 4 minutes into the second period when a 35-yard kick by Tina Manfre bounced high over Orange goalie Julie Brewer and into the net.

Six minutes later, Robyn Camarillo gave Mater Dei a 3-1 lead when she took a breakaway pass from Diana Awadallah and kicked a low liner past a diving Brewer.

Mater Dei got its third goal of the half with 18 minutes remaining on Margaret Braun’s short header after a scramble in the Orange penalty area. Three minutes later, Camarillo scored her second goal of the period when she took a head pass from Manfre.

Debbie Lewis closed out Mater Dei’s scoring with 7 minutes remaining when she took the ball after a scramble in front of the Orange goal and grounded it into the net.

“I told the team at halftime that they were worrying too much about winning and that they were playing down to Orange’s level,” said Mater Dei Coach Marty Breen, whose team will play Canyon (a 1-0 winner over Moreno Valley) in Tuesday’s semifinals. “I then told them that we needed to play up to our level and force them to raise their game, and they responded.”
