Share

Covina High School’s Tony Trujillo and Irvine Woodbridge’s Heath Sims each won their second CIF state wrestling championships Saturday at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Trujillo (53-0), a senior, and Selma High sophomore Gary Quintana were tied in the 112-pound final after overtime. Trujillo won on a tiebreaking rule that gave the match to the wrestler who was credited with the first reversal.

Trujillo had previously won a state championship at 98-pounds as a sophomore.

Sims (55-1), who won a state title last year at 132-pounds, pinned Monte Vista’s Dustin Harless in 1 minute 5 seconds in the 138-pound final. Sims breezed to the final, defeating four opponents, 42-8, with one pin.

Fresno Clovis West won the team championship with 57 points.

Santa Monica’s Greg Jackson lost his semifinal match to eventual champion Terry Watts of Caruthers, 5-2. Jackson finished third, beating Monte Vista’s Frank Millsap, 11-5.
