SportScope : San Pedro Soccer Team in Quarterfinals

The San Pedro Yugoslavs, a semipro men’s soccer team, plays a quarterfinal match in the Southern California regionals of the National Open Cup on Sunday at Daniels Field in San Pedro. The Yugoslavs, who beat the San Pedro Croate in overtime on penalty kicks last week, will meet the Los Angeles Cosmos at 2:30 p.m. In a quarterfinal match at 12:30 the L.A. Guanajuato will play the Valley Eagles of Van Nuys.

California Racing Assn. sprint cars will run at Ascot Raceway on Saturday at 8 p.m., followed by the pro stocks Sunday night at 6. This is the season-opening event for each at Ascot.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s softball team will compete in the 10-team Cal State Bakersfield Tournament this weekend. The tournament should present a fair look at how the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. race will go because five CCAA teams are entered. The event ends Sunday.

In Division II baseball, Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-9-1 overall) takes a break from CCAA play by playing host to George Fox University on Monday and Masters College on Tuesday. Both begin at 2:30 p.m.

The 10th annual Police vs. Fire Charity Bowl football game will be played April 8 at 2 p.m. at El Camino College. Sponsored by the South Bay Exchange Clubs, the event raises funds for the South Bay Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Tickets, at $25 per family, $15 per couple and $10 per person, are available at the Torrance YWCA, 2320 W. Carson St.

Loyola Marymount University will conduct a Special Games event for physically and mentally handicapped individuals at 9 a.m. Saturday at the school’s Sunken Gardens. Disney characters and celebrities are scheduled to participate. More information can be obtained by calling the school at 642-3335.

UCLA’s second-ranked men’s volleyball team plays host to 16th-ranked Ohio State tonight at 7:30. The Bruins are 18-3.
