UCSD Splits Doubleheader

The UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader with Metropolitan State Friday, winning the first game, 3-0, and losing the second, 8-4.

Rick Rupkey (7-0) went the distance, scattering five hits, for UCSD in the first game. Jim Martinez homered.

In the second game, Metropolitan State scored three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Rusty Befus hit a bases-empty home run for Metropolitan State in the fourth. Mike Nussbaum (2-1) picked up the victory.

UCSD (12-8) is ranked ninth in Division III, Metropolitan State 20th in Division II.

Point Loma Nazarene College split a nonconference doubleheader with visiting Wisconsin, winning the first game, 4-0, and losing the second, 3-2.

Brian Tema went one for two, scored two runs and had two RBIs for the Crusaders in the opening victory, then went two for three, doubled twice and scored Point Loma’s runs in the loss.

Crusader Coach Carroll Land can earn his 500th career victory by beating Cal Lutheran once in a doubleheader today.

SOFTBALL

UCSD (11-4) finished second in the Triton Tri tournament, losing to champion Cal State Stanislaus, 6-5, but defeating third-place San Bernardino, 1-0.

The Tritons were led in both games by Dana Chaiken, three for four with a double in the first game and two for four in the second.

Dianna Moreno knocked in the winning run with a single in the seventh inning of the second game.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Iowa, 5-4, at the UC Irvine tournament.

The Aztecs were led by Joe McDonough, who defeated Martin Aguire, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, at No, 2 singles, and Woody Yocom, who defeated Lars Nordmark, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

The match was decided at No. 1 doubles when Tole Marinkovic and Jeff Belloli defeated Aguire and Claus Ramel, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Division I Dartmouth routed host UCSD, 9-0. The Tritons are 5-8, ranked fifth in Division III.
