Prep Track Roundup : Franke Leads Canyon Girls Over El Modena

Allison Franke led the Canyon High School girls’ track and field team to a 68-59 victory over El Modena in a Century League meet Thursday at El Modena.

Franke won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.5 seconds, jumped 16 feet 8 inches in the long jump and 36-8 1/2 in the triple jump and threw the discus 154-8.

Her discus throw ranks third in the country this season. Dawn Gumbel of Bakersfield threw 170-11 and Candy Roberts of Don Lugo threw 157-9 in meets Thursday.

In another Century League girls’ meet:

Santa Ana Valley 79, Villa Park 47--Joanna Alo won the discus and the shotput with throws of 110-3 and 37-1 1/2, respectively, for Santa Ana Valley. Brenda Robinson won the 100 hurdles in 15.3 for Valencia.

In Century League boys’ meets:

El Modena 78, Canyon 57--Robbie Pietsch won the 330-yard and 120-yard hurdles to lead El Modena. Pietsch ran 41.1 for the 330 hurdles and 16.0 in the 120 hurdles.

Villa Park 71, Santa Ana Valley 64--Chuck Steen won the 100 meters in 10.8 and the 200 in 22.1, and Jimmy Rodriguez won the 3,200 in 9:46.8, but it wasn’t enough for host Santa Ana Valley.

In a Empire League boys’ meet:

Katella 76, Loara 60--Chris Yednack of Katella won the 100 yards in 10.6 and the 220 in 23.8 for host Katella.

In a Garden Grove League boys’ meet:

Kennedy 87, Santiago 52--Mike Moore ran 10.1 and James Chun 10.3 to take first and second places in the 100 yards, and Charley Cummings won the triple jump at 46- 1/2 to lead host Kennedy.

In a Garden Grove League girls’ meet:

Kennedy 65, Santiago 61--Michelle Harris won the 100 yards in 12.1 to pace Kennedy.

In Orange League boys’ meets:

Magnolia 68, Valencia 67--Magnolia won the meet in the final event, the mile relay. Kevin Thomas of Valencia won the 100 yards in 10.1 and the 220 in 22.8. Phouphet Singbandith of Magnolia won the long jump (22- 3/4) and the triple jump (44-4).

Savanna 88, Brea-Olinda 35--Wes Schneider of Brea-Olinda took the 110-meter hurdles in 15.1 in the league opener for both teams.

Western 76, Anaheim 59--Dariel Whipple leaped 21-10 in the long jump as Western opened its league season with a victory.

In Orange League girls’ meets:

Valencia 74, Magnolia 53--Debbie LaPorte won the 100 yards in 11.5 and the 220 in 27.2 to lead Valencia.

Savanna 60, Brea-Olinda 47--Nancy Chabot of Brea-Olinda won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.3.

In a Pacific Coast League boys’ meet:

Orange 73, Trabuco Hills 66--Pete Casto won the mile in 4:50 to lead Orange in its league opener.

In a Sea View League boys’ meet:

Corona del Mar 93, University 41--Eddie Lavelle ran a 9:34.8 in the two-mile race to pace Corona del Mar.

In a Sea View League girls’ meet:

Saddleback 67, Newport Harbor 55--Danetta Chaney won the 100 meters, 200, long jump and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team for Saddleback. Chaney ran 12.5 and 26.6 in the 100 and 200 and long-jumped 13-10.

In a South Coast League boys’ meet:

San Clemente 94, Irvine 50--San Clemente’s Tim Martin won the 100 meters in 10.7 and the 200 in 22.4.

In South Coast League girls’ meets:

Mission Viejo 97, Capistrano Valley 30--Lisa Fager of Mission Viejo won the triple jump with leap of 37-1 and the high jump (5-2).

San Clemente 76 1/2, Irvine 51 1/2--Tabi Bahu paced San Clemente with a 2:23.0 in the 800 meters.

In a Sunset League boys’ meet:

Edison 83 1/2, Huntington Beach 51 1/2--Doug Nichols won the 400 in 49.9 for Edison. Dave Baker won the 800 in 1:59.8 for Edison.
