Forward Sam Johnson and center Mitch McMullen were named co-most valuable players for San Diego State at its awards banquet. McMullen also received the top rebounder award, and Johnson was named top defensive player and was honored as the team captain.

Mark Kraatz of Christian Heritage has been named to All-American teams by both the National Christian College Athletic Assn. and the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. Kraatz led the nation’s Christian schools in assists (10.1 per game) and the Hawks to a 24-9 record.

BASEBALL

Cal State Northridge scored three first-inning runs and went on to defeat the University of San Diego, 8-4, in a nonconference game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium. Valentin Lopez (4-4) got the victory for Cal State Northridge (16-10). Jim Westlund (0-1) was the loser for USD (15-16-1).

Doug Irwin held Cal Baptist to two hits as Point Loma Nazarene College won, 6-4, in a nonconference game. Randy Tippitt and A.J. Napier were two for three for Point Loma Nazarene (16-16).

SOFTBALL

San Diego State’s Sara Ahern (6-7) and Michelle Wesson (4-11) each pitched two-hit shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of U.S. International (12-22-1). Christy Knight hit a two-run double in the first game, giving the Aztecs (15-23-1) a 2-0 victory. SDSU won the second game, 5-0.

MEN’S TENNIS

Host UC Irvine defeated the University of San Diego, 5-1, in a nonconference match. J.R. Edwards defeated Shige Kanroji at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, for USD’s only victory. USD (19-6) is rated No. 15 in the country in NCAA Division I, and UC Irvine (19-6) is No. 5.

Host Point Loma Nazarene defeated Christ College Irvine, 9-0. Point Loma Nazarene (2-13) won all of its singles matches, 6-0, 6-0. Christ College is 1-17.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

John Lim had 10 kills as UC San Diego defeated visiting Chapman College, 15-5, 15-6, 15-5. UCSD is 5-14, Chapman 3-19.
