High School Track : Smith, Van Scoy Lead Rio Mesa to Victory

Share

To the average track fan, Rio Mesa High is known as the home of Angela Burnham, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters and Track and Field News’ 1988 female athlete of the year.

But if senior Lester Smith and sophomore Patrick Van Scoy continue to improve as they have in recent weeks, Burnham may have to learn to share some of the recognition.

On Thursday, Van Scoy and Smith each won two events to lead Rio Mesa (5-0) to a double dual-meet Channel League victory over Hueneme (90-45) and Oxnard (109-23) at Rio Mesa.

Van Scoy set a personal best of 53 feet, 7 inches in the shotput and another personal best and school record of 165-0 in the discus.

In the girls’ meet, Burnham led the Spartans to a 94-32 victory over Oxnard and a 110-8 victory over Hueneme.

Burnham won the 100 in 11.8, the 200 in 24.9 and anchored the 400 relay to victory in 49.1.
