High School Track : Harrold Gives Canyon Share of League Title

Canyon Coach Dave DeLong calls Corey Harrold the heart and soul of the Canyon High boys’ track team and on Thursday, Harrold powered the Cowboys to a 71-56 victory over Palmdale in a Golden League meet at Canyon.

Harrold, a senior, won the 200 meters in 22.8 seconds, the 400 in 49.8 and the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

The Canyon victory guaranteed the Cowboys (5-1 overall, 4-0 in league meets) a share of the league title. They can clinch the title outright with a win over Saugus next Thursday.

Other Canyon winners included sophomore Dave Hartman in the 3,200 (9 minutes, 55 seconds), Clint Beauer in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.1) and Jamil Austin in the high jump (6-2).

In other boys’ meets:

Royal 103, Newbury Park 33--Sophomore Tim Ross won three events for Royal in the Marmonte League meet at Newbury Park.

Ross took the high jump--his specialty--at 6-2, the long jump at 20-10 and the triple jump at 42-6 1/2 as the Highlanders (3-1) kept pace with Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League race.

Dean Hansen added victories in the shotput (48-1 1/2) and discus (144-2) for Royal.

Sean Wolpin won the 120-yard high hurdles (15.1) and the 330-yard intermediate hurdles (42.3) for Newbury Park (2-2).

Rio Mesa 89, Camarillo 47--Patrick Van Scoy and Lester Smith led the Spartans to victory in the nonleague meet at Rio Mesa.

Van Scoy won the shotput (53-3) and the discus (160-6) and Smith, a senior, won the long jump (20-9) and the triple jump (45-3).

Jeff Garner won the high jump with a personal best of 6-4.

Juniors Abe Valdez and Chad Malesich led Camarillo as Valdez won the 1,600 in 4:29.1 and the 3,200 in 9:31.7, and Malesich took the 800 in 1:59.3

Alemany 71, St. Francis 56--Tony Borquez won three events to lead Alemany (3-2, 1-2) in the Del Rey League meet at St. Francis.

Borquez, eighth in the 400 at last year’s state championships, won the 100 yards in 10.1, the 220 in 22.8, the 440 in 52.2, and anchored Alemany’s 440 relay win (45.0).

Carpinteria 77, Oak Park 59--Coley Candaele won the 440 and the 880 to lead visiting Carpinteria in a Tri-Valley League match.

Candaele ran the 440 in 50.0 and the 880 in 2:03.3. Candaele also anchored Carpinteria (2-1, 1-1) to victory in the mile relay in 3:31.5.

For Oak Park (2-1, 1-1), Jason Stein won the 100-yard dash in 10.3 and the 330-yard intermediate hurdles in 42.4. Jess Garner won the 110 high hurdles in 15.3.

Agoura 90, Santa Ynez 46--The Chargers captured 10 individual events to win the Frontier League meet at Agoura.

Bryan Dameworth, the two-time defending state Division I cross-country champion, won the 800 meters (2:00.7), 1,600 meters (4:27.7) and 3,200 meters (10:00.6). Teammate Jeff Ingalls won the 100-meter dash (11.2), 400 meters (51.2) and anchored the Chargers (3-2, 3-0) to victory in the 1,600 meter relay (3:35.7).

In girls’ meets:

Rio Mesa 90, Camarillo 36--Shannon Wiebelhaus won three events and Angela Burnham won two as the Spartans remained undefeated (6-0) in the nonleague meet at Rio Mesa.

Wiebelhaus won the 200 (26.0), 300-meter low hurdles (47.1), triple jump (32-11) and ran the second led on Rio Mesa’s victorious 400 relay (50.5).

Burnham won the 100 in 12.1, the 400 in 57.4, anchored the 400 relay (50.5) and ran the first leg on the 1,600 relay (4:19.5).
