The Sockers have signed goalie Otto Orf for the remainder of the season. Orf, backup for starter Victor Nogueira, has made three appearances for the Sockers and went the distance in a 4-2 victory over Tacoma Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena.

COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Mike Miringoff of San Dieguito High has signed a national letter of intent to play men’s tennis at Cal State Long Beach. Veena Prabajker of Bonita Vista has signed to play women’s tennis at Berkeley.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego did not lose in a match in the first day of the West Coast Athletic Conference championships at Pepperdine and is tied with Pepperdine for first in the team standings with 54 points.

No. 1 Jose Luis Noriega and No. 4 Dave Stewart led USD. Noriega defeated Tony Canedo of San Francisco, 6-0, 6-1, and Stewart defeated Jon Holiday of Loyola Marymount, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round of singles. Noriega and Stewart, seeded No. 1 in doubles, won their second-round match.

UC San Diego defeated Claremont Mudd, 5-4, giving the Tritons a 10-1 record against NCAA Division III competition and a probable Division III tournament berth.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego took the lead after the first day of the WCAC championships at USD. The Toreras have 24 points, followed by Pepperdine, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount with 18. Third-seeded Jennifer Larking of USD defeated Amy Zepp of Gonzaga, 6-1, 6-0 and fourth-seeded Aby Brayton defeated Anna Zimmerman of Gonzaga, 6-1, 6-0.

BOWLING

The San Diego State men are eighth with 11,785 pins after 12 games of team qualifying and the first six match-play games at the national college championships in Las Vegas. In today’s remaining 18 match-play games, the Aztecs must move into the top three to qualify for the semifinals.

BASEBALL

Sean Gousha’s two-out single to left drove home the winning run for visiting University of San Diego (17-26-1, 2-14) in a 4-3 victory over San Francisco in West Coast Athletic Conference game. Gousha knocked in Paul Thornton who had doubled. Bob Grandpre (2-0) won in relief for the Toreros.

Senior Kevin Tahan broke the U.S. International home run record with his 13th of the year, a three-run shot in the third inning, but USIU (16-27) lost, 6-4, to host Chapman College.
