College Roundup : Peters, Staton Help Fullerton to 8-6 Victory

Rex Peters and Dave Staton had two-run singles in the eighth inning Saturday night to give Cal State Fullerton an 8-6 victory over San Jose State in a Big West Conference baseball game at Fullerton.

The Titans (26-18 overall and 6-5 in conference) led, 4-0, after seven innings. The Spartans, however, scored five runs in the eighth.

In the bottom of the inning, Peters’ two-out single put the Titans ahead, 6-5. Staton then singled to drive in two more runs for an 8-5 lead.

Sam Colarusso (3-3) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief for the victory. Danny DeVille pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven, for Fullerton before leaving with one out in the eighth.

Dave Tellers (11-3) pitched 7 2/3 innings, but took the loss for San Jose State (36-10, 7-4).

Nevada Las Vegas 8, UC Irvine 6--Lance Sims had three hits and two RBIs for Las Vegas (31-11, 7-4) at Irvine. Chance Gledhill (4-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the victory. Chris Gallego had two hits for the Anteaters (15-28-1, 1-10).

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 5-1, Point Loma Nazarene 2-1--In the second game, Jim Dedrick pitched a three-hitter, striking out six, for host Southern California College (22-16, 11-6).

In nonconference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 2-4, Claremont 1-8--In the first game, Kevin Caporicci (1-4) pitched a two-hitter for Christ College Irvine (6-26-1) at Claremont.

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 4-0, Fresno State 3-4--In the first game, fourth-ranked Fullerton (40-10, 24-6) scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead at Fresno. Angie Bryant, Mich DeBree and Carey Heff each had a run-scoring single in the inning. In the second game, Terry Carpenter (21-4) pitched a four-hitter for her 16th shutout of the season for the Bulldogs (39-10, 17-5).
