IN BRIEF : Ex-49er Carl Monroe, 29, Dies
Former San Francisco 49er Carl Monroe, who scored the first touchdown in the 1985 Super Bowl, died today of a heart attack. He was 29.
Monroe, who lived in San Jose, was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center at 7:30 a.m. in full cardiac arrest, according to nursing supervisor Jordan Pavacich. Resuscitation efforts failed, and he was pronounced dead at 7:58 a.m.
No further details were immediately available.
The 5-foot-8, 180-pound Monroe was a kick returner and reserve running back from 1983 to 1987 for the 49ers.
Monroe scored San Francisco’s first touchdown of the 1984 regular season and caught a 33-yard TD pass from Joe Montana to open the scoring in the Super Bowl at Stanford Stadium the following January. The 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins in that game, 38-16.
