Harper & Row has agreed to pay $9.6 million for reprint rights to 33 titles by Agatha Christie, a bid that far exceeded what the auction had been expected to bring, it was reported today.

The agreement amounts to almost $300,000 for each title, including such classics as “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile,” the New York Times reported. It takes effect on Oct. 1, 1991. Harper’s will then be able to publish the books for eight years and three months, after which several titles go into the public domain.

G. P. Putnam’s, which conducted the auction on behalf of the Christie estate, had established a minimum bid of $2.9 million.
