A swamp fire in the Osceola National Forest grew to 8,200 acres Saturday, dimming firefighters’ hopes of containing the flames by tonight.

More than 140 firefighters battled the blaze, using a tanker plane and helicopters to dump water on hot spots, authorities said.

The fire, which began Tuesday, did not threaten any buildings, and no injuries were reported. The flames burned within half a mile of Florida Highway 2, forcing authorities to close a five-mile stretch of the highway because of smoke.
