Violence Claims 8 More Victims Over Weekend

Violence claimed the lives of at least eight people over the weekend, including an 18-year-old man who was attacked by a group of teen-age gang members in Sun Valley, police said.

The Sun Valley victim was beaten and shot by eight to 12 youths after he left a party in the 7500 block of Cartwright Avenue, Los Angeles police said. Police would not identify the victim pending notification of his family.

The attack was believed to be gang-related and several juvenile gang members were questioned early Sunday, police said.

One witness, an 18-year-old high school student who saw the killing from his front door, said, “There were a whole bunch of gang members chasing (the victim) down the street. They caught up to him right in front of my house and they just started beating and kicking him.

“They kept yelling, ‘Where you from? Where you from?’ ”

In the other slayings:

- A 17-year-old boy was killed in a gang-related, drive-by shooting in Southwest Los Angeles.

The teen-ager was wounded in the neck by a shot fired from a group of youths on West 41st Street. Police said someone yelled a gang name before opening fire.

- In South El Monte, one woman was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting during an argument at a home, sheriff’s deputies said.

Officers said a man was being sought in the Tamora Avenue shootings. The woman was dead on arrival at Greater El Monte Community Hospital. The other two victims were in serious condition.

- A man sitting in a car was fatally wounded by a shot fired from another vehicle in Southwest Los Angeles in an apparent gang-related incident, police said. The man, whose name was not disclosed, died at a hospital.

- In South-Central Los Angeles, a man was killed and a second was seriously wounded. Police said the shooting may have been gang-related. The victims’ names were withheld.

No motives were known for the following deaths:

- In East Los Angeles, a newspaper deliveryman found the bullet-riddled body of an unidentified man in an alley behind a nightclub, authorities said.

- An unidentified man was found shot to death in a telephone booth in Hawthorne, police said.

- An unidentified man was found shot to death in a car on a North Hollywood street.
